Measurement: Length!

Chapter 13: Using Standard Units

Measurement answers one question: "How long, really?" In this chapter, we learn to measure with centimetres and metres so everyone gets the same answer!

Whose Measurement Is Right?

Riya measures a table with her hand spans. "It's 5 hands long!"

Her dad measures the same table. "I got 4 hands!"

Milo barks: "Why are the numbers different?"

"Because our hands are different sizes!" says Riya. "We need a standard unit — something that's always the same size!"

Same table, different answers! Why?
Their hands are different sizes
They counted wrong
The table changed size
It's magic
💡
We need standard units — measurements that are always the same size, no matter who uses them!
📏
Standard Units: cm and m
Centimetre for small, Metre for big

Here are the two units we'll use. Tap each card to learn more!

📏
Centimetre
Written as cm
pencil, eraser, book
📐
Metre
Written as m
door, room, classroom
Centimetre (cm)

Use centimetres for small things you can hold in your hand: a pencil, an eraser, a book edge.

Your fingernail is about 1 cm wide! 👆

💡 Remember: 100 centimetres = 1 metre. But we won't convert between them yet — first, let's learn to measure!

📏
Using a Ruler Correctly
Start from zero!

The most important rule: Start from ZERO, not from the edge of the ruler!

✅ CORRECT: Start from 0
Start here!
0
0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Object = 4 cm ✓
❌ WRONG: Starting from edge (not 0)
0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Wrong measurement! ✗
🎯
Three steps: 1. Align at zero2. Keep straight3. Read the endpoint
✏️
Measuring Small Objects
Using centimetres

Look at the object on the ruler. How many centimetres long is it?

📏
This pencil is ___ cm long
🚪
Measuring Big Objects
Using metres

For big things, we use metres. First estimate, then measure!

🚪
Door
About 2 m
🪑
Desk
About 1 m
🏠
Room
About 5 m
🚗
Car
About 4 m
🤔 How long do you think a door is?
10 cm
50 cm

10 m

💡 Estimation tip: Your arm stretched out is about 1 metre long. Use your body to estimate!

📏 Why Starting at Zero Matters
Common mistake: Children often align objects with the edge of the ruler instead of the zero mark, leading to measurements that are off by several millimetres.
Prevention: Always point out the zero mark explicitly. Use rulers where zero is clearly visible and not at the edge.
⚠️ Common Ruler Mistakes
Starting from edge: Not all rulers start at 0 at the edge — always find the 0 mark.
Tilted ruler: The ruler must be straight alongside the object.
Reading at angle: Look straight down at the endpoint, not from the side.
🏠 Home Measurement Activities
Measure your things: Pencils, books, toys — anything that fits a ruler!
Height chart: Mark heights on a wall each month. How much did you grow?
Estimation game: Guess before you measure. Who was closest?
Body measurements: Foot length, arm span, hand span — all in cm!

🧡 Readiness signs: Child consistently starts from zero, chooses correct unit for different objects, and estimates reasonably before measuring.
