Heavy, Light & Balance!

Chapter 14: Measurement — Weight

Weight is something we feel before we measure! A big balloon is light. A small stone can be heavy. Let's learn to compare and measure weight!

The Surprising Box!

Riya is packing for a trip. She sees two boxes. 📦

"This big box looks heavy!" she says.

But when she lifts it... "It's so light!" It's full of pillows! 🪶

Then she tries the small box... "Wow, this is heavy!" It's full of books! 📚

Milo tilts his head. "Size doesn't tell you weight!"

Heavy or Light?
Feeling first — which is heavier?

Which is heavier?

⚠️ Remember: Big doesn't always mean heavy! A big balloon is lighter than a small stone. Always lift to feel!

⚖️
Comparing Using a Balance
The balance tells the truth!

When we're not sure, a balance scale shows us which is heavier!

"The heavier side goes DOWN. The lighter side goes UP. If both sides stay level, they weigh the SAME!"

Introducing Kilogram (kg)
A standard way to measure weight
kg
Kilogram
When we want to tell someone exactly how heavy something is, we use kilograms. It's a word everyone understands!

🏪 At the shop, the grocer says:
"These potatoes weigh 2 kg"

🍎 Apple
Less than 1 kg
📚 Book
About 1 kg
🎒 School bag
3-5 kg
🍚 Rice bag
5-10 kg

💡 Remember: We use kilograms (kg) for things we can lift — fruits, vegetables, bags, books. For very heavy things like cars, we use tonnes!

📊
Measuring Weight (kg)
Estimate first, then measure!

Guess first! How heavy do you think this is? Then let's measure!

? kg
🎒

How heavy is the school bag?

📊
Comparing Weights
Heavier than, lighter than, equal to

Now we can compare using numbers! Which is heavier?

Which is heavier: the bag (5 kg) or the watermelon (3 kg)?

💡 Tip: The bigger number means heavier! 5 kg is heavier than 3 kg because 5 > 3.

Choosing the Right Tool

🧠 Common Misconceptions
"Bigger means heavier": Children often think size = weight. Use examples like balloon vs stone to break this.
"Weight and size are the same": Help children understand that weight is about how much "stuff" is inside, not how big it looks.
"I can see weight": Weight is felt, not seen. Encourage lifting and comparing before measuring.
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Watch For
Judging by appearance: Always ask "Did you lift it?" before accepting a weight comparison.
Confusing balance direction: Remind children: heavier side goes DOWN.
Forgetting the unit: "The bag is 5" — 5 what? Always include "kg".
🏠 Home Activities
🏋️ Lifting games: Hold two different objects and ask "Which is heavier?" — make it a guessing game!
🛒 Shopping helper: At the store, read weight labels together. "This rice bag is 5 kg!"
⚖️ Kitchen balance: Use a simple balance or see-saw to compare objects at home.
📊 Weight hunt: Find 3 things heavier than a book and 3 things lighter. Make a chart!
🤔 Surprising weights: Find a big light thing (pillow?) and a small heavy thing (stone?). Discuss why!
Correct!
