You’ll split time between office work and site visits. In the morning you might update construction plans and CADD drawings, answer client emails, or prepare contract documents.
Afternoons often mean meeting contractors on site to inspect conditions, check progress against the plan, and resolve issues. Some days you also write operating or maintenance manuals, run feasibility checks, or work on proposals to win the next job.
You’ll use CADD software daily for plans and details; many firms use AutoCAD or Revit (CADD is the general term). For presentations and marketing materials, expect Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, and Illustrator.
Large firms sometimes store project data or run analyses on cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or EC2. Tools like Apache Maven/Hadoop/Redshift appear only in firms that do heavy data or cost modeling.
You’ll run predesign studies and gather environmental data, then design systems to cut energy use. That includes comparing estimated energy use of your design to baseline standards to calculate potential savings.
You may prepare reports and operating manuals showing projected savings, and coordinate with engineers during construction to ensure systems are installed to meet those numbers.
Construction architects focus on buildings: plans, site inspections, contracts, and client meetings. Their tasks include CADD drawings, feasibility studies, and creating maintenance manuals.
Naval architects or marine engineers design and analyze vessels and floating structures, ensure regulatory compliance for boats and ships, and use maritime English. The two jobs overlap in engineering principles but work on different types of structures.

Start with an accredited architecture degree (B.Arch or M.Arch) and learn CADD software (AutoCAD/Revit). Take courses or practice in structural basics so you can plan structures and talk with engineers.
