Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a facade designer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You’ll split time between site visits and desk work. On site you check existing conditions, take measurements, and inspect cladding, anchors, and weather seals.

Back at the office you draw details in Autodesk AutoCAD or Revit, update spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel, write specifications in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat, and coordinate with engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve issues before construction.

Start with Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit — designers use those every day for 2D details and 3D BIM models. Learn how to export drawings to PDF and use Adobe Acrobat for markups.

Also learn Microsoft Excel for cost estimates and schedules, and Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop for presentation visuals. Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS helps on complex urban or environmental projects.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, 2025) there were about 19,600 employed in this field with a median pay of $79,870 per year. The lowest tenth earned about $54,770 and the top tenth about $130,190.

Pay varies by city, employer, and project type. Large facades on towers, historic preservation, or specialty materials tend to pay more.

You produce construction drawings and specifications that contractors follow, then visit the site to inspect installations and resolve defects. Use Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD to issue revised details and Adobe Acrobat for annotated RFIs (requests for information).

You also manage subcontractors by setting acceptance criteria, approving mock-ups, and documenting inspections so the owner and architect have a clear record of quality control.

AI can help draft specification text, generate presentation images, or summarize meeting notes, but don’t let it replace technical checks. Always verify AI output against manufacturer data, structural calculations, and code requirements.

Keep confidential project files off public AI tools. Use AI for repetitive tasks (like formatting Excel cost sheets) and for ideation, then produce final drawings in AutoCAD/Revit and check everything with your engineering team.

Facade designers focus on the skin of the building: cladding systems, anchors, waterproofing, thermal performance, and constructability. Architects handle overall building design and space planning; facade engineers handle structural and thermal calculations specific to the facade.

In practice you coordinate: architects set the aesthetic intent, engineers validate loads and anchors, and facade designers produce the detailed systems, shop drawings, and specifications that contractors build from.
