Add and manage bookmarks

Add and manage bookmarks in Google Docs — with the four heights of help laid out: do it now, make it easier for the next person to accept, work out the right move when you are stuck, and learn the pattern so it stops coming back.

The four heights

The same task, four distances: today's deadline, the next reviewer, the stuck moment, the pattern.

Place bookmarks at the start of each chapter and at the two appendix tables so external reviewers can jump around. Create a named bookmark called Chapter 3 — Market Analysis at the first heading of that chapter and another named Appendix A — Data Table at the top of the appendix table. Confirm the bookmarks work from the document outline and send me a link to the bookmarked locations before Wednesday.

Improve — make it easier to accept

Before I hand this to senior editors, make navigation obvious. Add bookmarks for all chapter starts and critical tables, rename them with short action labels like Go to Chapter 3 — Market Analysis, and add a one-line instruction at the top explaining how reviewers can use them. Highlight any headings that won’t bookmark cleanly because they’re formatted inconsistently.

Decide — diagnose the stuck moment

I bookmarked Chapter 3 but the editor still couldn't jump to it

I added a bookmark named Chapter 3 — Market Analysis and told the editor it’s the quickest way to jump there, but they said the link went to the wrong paragraph. The chapter headings were copied from several documents and use mixed formatting. I don’t know which heading styles break bookmarks or how to fix them without losing layout. What likely caused the bookmark to misalign and how do I repair it so the editor can jump exactly to the chapter start?

Become — change the pattern

I keep fixing navigation for each new draft manually

Every new draft I spend time re-creating bookmarks because headings shift or content is pasted from other files, and reviewers waste time scrolling. I produce recurring reports and this takes up hours each cycle. Which habit, template tweak, or naming convention will stop these repeated navigation failures and make every new document instantly navigable?

Other word processor work people do in Google Docs.

Every task here came from the work, not from a feature list — which is why the prompts name what you want done and never the button that does it. The tool changes; the work does not.
