Add footnotes and endnotes

Insert footnotes for all citations and add an endnotes page for further reading. Put numbered footnotes at the end of the sentence where each citation appears, using the Chicago note format: author, short title, year, page. Then create an endnotes section titled Further Reading that lists three recommended articles not cited inline. Check that the footnote numbers are sequential and update if you move text.

Before I finalize the thesis, make the citation apparatus review-friendly: show a one-page list of the footnote text alongside the page number where it appears, flag any footnotes longer than two lines that should be moved to endnotes, and recommend which notes to convert to endnotes for flow. Highlight any uncited endnote recommendations that should be turned into proper citations.

My advisor asked for Chicago-style footnotes, but I have long parenthetical citations and several long asides in parentheses. I worry switching to footnotes will break pagination and my word count, and I cannot tell which parentheticals are essential in-text vs. candidates for footnotes. Which items should I convert first, how do I preserve page breaks and the word count, and what is the safest way to present this change to my advisor?

Over many reports we accumulate long, meandering footnotes that reviewers skip or complain about.
