Sort data by column

Sort data by column in Google Sheets — with the four heights of help laid out: do it now, make it easier for the next person to accept, work out the right move when you are stuck, and learn the pattern so it stops coming back.

The four heights

The same task, four distances: today's deadline, the next reviewer, the stuck moment, the pattern.

Execute — do the immediate task

I need the customer list sorted for tomorrow’s outreach. Sort the sheet so the Region column sorts A to Z, then within each region sort by Last Contact date newest to oldest, and keep the header row fixed. Confirm that formulas referencing the visible range still work after the sort.

Improve — make it easier to accept

Before I hand this to Sales, make the sort useful: put high-priority accounts—those with Open Deal = Yes—at the top of each region, then sort by Last Contact newest to oldest, and add a small helper column that shows rank within region so reps can pick top three. Flag rows with missing Last Contact dates.

Decide — diagnose the stuck moment

I tried to sort and formulas broke.

I attempted to sort the sheet by Region but the INDEX formulas on the dashboard now show wrong rows. I’m the ops lead and can’t explain this in the 9 a.m. stand-up. Did I break relative references or is the dashboard using absolute ranges? What’s the safest next step to restore the correct display without losing the sort I just did?

Become — change the pattern

Sorting repeatedly shifts dashboards out of sync.

Every time I sort raw data for a campaign, the shared dashboard shows wrong entries and I have to rebuild parts of it. This wastes time and annoys Sales. What persistent practice or structural change will keep my working sort for the team without breaking the dashboard—short checklist, column setup, or a change in how I reference ranges?

Other spreadsheet work people do in Google Sheets.

Every task here came from the work, not from a feature list — which is why the prompts name what you want done and never the button that does it. The tool changes; the work does not.
