Grief is more than sadness. A person can lose a shared language. This is a way of understanding another person without words. This connection is deep and private. Only certain people share it. When that person is gone, the unspoken language is lost. A person's identity can change after a loss. A person might have been a 'little brother' for many years. After a sibling dies, the person may question who they are now. The loss affects how a person sees themselves. Other people may not see a person's grief. At a funeral, people often ask about a spouse or children. They may not ask about an older person who knew the deceased for a long time. This makes the grieving person feel invisible. Grief also means losing the future. A person loses not only the past memories. They also lose future plans. These are the things a person hoped to do with the one who is gone. A person may become the only one left to tell family stories. This is an honor. But it is also a heavy responsibility. The person carries the weight of all the memories alone.
A user tells an AI model about losing a lifelong friend. The AI model responds by only offering condolences about past memories. The user feels misunderstood because the AI model did not acknowledge the loss of future plans or the unique bond they shared. The AI model should have recognized the many layers of grief.
