The rule

A short pre-assessment helps an AI model understand a user's knowledge.

The AI model uses this information to personalize learning. The pre-assessment is never punitive and does not stop progress.

A pre-assessment should be short, about 30-60 seconds. It should happen once per chapter of learning material. The pre-assessment includes one recognition question. It also includes one self-rating question. The user rates their knowledge on a simple scale.

A student starts a new chapter on grammar. The AI model asks, 'Which word is a verb: quickly, jump, blue, table?' The AI model then asks, 'How well do you know verbs: new to me, I've met this, I know this?' The student answers. The AI model then adjusts the difficulty of practice exercises. The AI model also changes how many hints it offers. This helps the student learn better.
