How can a developer make sure a child element stays inside its parent's boundaries in CSS?

A parent HTML element with `position: relative` and `overflow: hidden` will clip its child elements. Child elements with `position: absolute` will stay inside the parent's boundaries. This technique helps control how elements appear.

The rule

A parent HTML element with `position: relative` and `overflow: hidden` will clip its child elements.

Child elements with `position: absolute` will stay inside the parent's boundaries. This technique helps control how elements appear.

A developer can use `position: relative` and `overflow: hidden` on the parent element. This makes the parent a container. Any part of a child element that goes outside the parent will not be seen. The child element should have `position: absolute`. This allows the child to be placed precisely within the parent. The child element will then be clipped by the parent's boundaries. For example, a progress bar can be a child element. It can be set to `width: 100%` and still be clipped. Text or percentages can be placed on top using a higher `z-index` value. This ensures the text is always visible over the bar.

A designer wants to show a poll option with a colored bar indicating votes. The developer creates a `div` for the poll option. The developer sets `position: relative` and `overflow: hidden` on this `div`. Inside, another `div` for the poll bar is added with `position: absolute`. The poll bar will grow or shrink but never go outside the poll option's box. Text showing the poll percentage is placed on top of the bar.

How should a developer size buttons on a web page?

A button should only be as wide as its text and the space around the text. This is called content-sized.

How do I structure the HTML and CSS for a movie section with a carousel?

The `.movie-section` is a main part of the page. It has a warm background color.

Why did a CSS change hide parts of a user interface and delete content?

A developer tried to fix a display issue. The developer wrapped two elements, `#status` and `#milestoneFooter`, in a new container called `.status-slot`.

How can a user interface element appear over content without changing the page layout?

Use `position: absolute` on the element. This takes the element out of the normal document flow.
