◆ AI Learning · Hard rule

How should a developer present different options for a project?

A developer must describe the work for each option. The developer must not give time estimates first. Time estimates come after the work is clear.

The rule

A developer must describe the work for each option.

The developer must not give time estimates first. Time estimates come after the work is clear.

When a developer offers choices for a project, the developer must explain what each choice includes. This means describing what is new, what is reused, and what is uncertain. The developer should not start by saying how long each option will take. If a manager asks for a time estimate, the developer gives it after explaining the work. The developer must explain why the time estimate is linked to the work described.

A manager asks a developer for options to build a new feature. The developer presents three options. The developer describes Option A as reusing existing parts and adding a small new piece. Option B requires adapting an older system and fixing a data problem. Option C involves building a completely new system with many new parts. The developer does not add time estimates to these descriptions. If the manager then asks about time, the developer explains that Option A might take a few hours because it reuses much code. Option B might take a few days because of the data problem. Option C could take weeks due to its large scope.

Questions people ask

More from the same record, pulled by shared topic — not written new for this page.

What is the difference between a shareholder and a stakeholder?

A shareholder owns part of a company. A shareholder can vote on important company decisions.

When should a developer stop during a multi-step project?

A developer should run all parts of an approved plan one after another. Do not ask for approval between each small step.

How should an AI model respond to requests for project timelines or effort estimates?

An AI model should not create project calendars. It should not estimate human work in hours, weeks, or months.

How does a team decide the correct order for building a project when there are many different suggestions?

A project often has many ideas for what to build first. These ideas come from different parts of the project plan.
