Fairness means giving each person what they need or deserve based on their situation.
Equality means giving every person the exact same thing. These two ideas are different and can cause conflict.
Equality means everyone gets the same amount or treatment. For example, everyone pays the same amount of money. Fairness, also called equity, means each person contributes based on what they can do. It means each person gets what is right for their specific situation. Conflicts often happen because people use different ideas of fair or equal without knowing it.
A family needs to pay for a parent's care. One sibling believes 'equal' means splitting the cost 50/50. Another sibling believes 'fair' means they should pay less because they stopped working to provide daily care for the parent. The second sibling thinks the first sibling should pay more money.
