Suffering is an extra layer of negative feelings. A person chooses how to react to pain.

Pain is a direct feeling from a bad situation. For example, seeing unfairness can cause pain. This pain is often unavoidable. Suffering is the extra bad feelings a person adds to the pain. These feelings can be guilt or worry. A person can choose not to add these feelings.

A student sees a friend being treated unfairly. The student feels pain because of the injustice. The student then starts to feel guilty for not speaking up sooner. This guilt is suffering. The student can learn to feel the pain without adding the guilt.
