What happens if an AI system's text-to-speech feature fails?

An AI system must have backup plans for every possible failure. When a primary function fails, a secondary function should take over. This ensures the user always has a working experience.

The rule

An AI system must have backup plans for every possible failure.

When a primary function fails, a secondary function should take over. This ensures the user always has a working experience.

An API error during sound generation means the sound file is not created. The system then uses the browser's built-in text-to-speech. If an MP3 file is damaged, the system detects this. It then switches to the browser's text-to-speech. If the server storing the sound files cannot be reached, the system also uses the browser's text-to-speech. If the wrong voice is used in a generated file, the system deletes the file. It creates a new one the next time it is requested. If the service runs out of API credits, new sound files cannot be made. Existing sound files still play. New requests use the browser's text-to-speech. Each failure allows the system to continue working in a simpler way.

A developer creates an application that reads text aloud using an AI model. The AI model's server goes offline. Instead of showing an error, the application automatically uses the web browser's built-in voice. The user can still hear the text, even though the AI model is not working.

Questions people ask

Why does an AI model reject requests even when rate limits are high?

A developer sets limits on how many requests an AI model can handle. These are called rate limits.

Is it better to publish a blog post with missing parts or with incorrect information?

It is better to publish a blog post that has missing sections. Incorrect information can confuse readers.

How can a system show when something goes wrong?

A system must have a clear signal for every failure. This signal can be a specific time, a tap pattern, or a wrong input.

Why must every wrong answer choice have specific feedback?

A developer creates wrong answer choices for a question. Each wrong choice needs a matching explanation.
