The rule

An onboarding process should ask a user no more than three questions.

Too many questions make a user leave. The user should not be forced to sign up before seeing value.

An onboarding process should ask a user a maximum of three questions. Asking more questions can make the user leave without finishing. Other settings should have default values. The user can change these settings later if they want to. The user should be able to try the product without signing up first. This shows the product's value before asking for personal information. All choices made during onboarding should be easy to change later in the settings.

A student downloads a new language learning app. The app asks the student for their native language, the language they want to learn, and their learning goal. It does not ask for an email address or to create an account. The student starts a lesson immediately. If the app asked five questions and required an account first, the student might close the app.
