How can a person communicate when another person's rational thinking is not working?

A person's brain has two parts: a rational part and an emotional part. When the rational part is not working well, communication must focus on the emotional part. Logic will not work.

The rule

A person's brain has two parts: a rational part and an emotional part.

When the rational part is not working well, communication must focus on the emotional part. Logic will not work.

A person needs a simple way to understand communication. Logic and reason do not always work. The rational part of another person's brain might be broken. The emotional part of their brain is still working. All communication should speak to the emotional brain.

A parent tries to explain a problem with logic to a child who is very upset. The child cannot understand the logic. The parent then speaks with a calm voice and offers comfort. The child responds better to the comfort.

Questions people ask

More from the same record, pulled by shared topic — not written new for this page.

How can I understand what someone really means when their words seem to say something else?

People sometimes use words that do not fully show their feelings. A parent might say something that sounds like control.

How can a person ask questions to build trust in a conversation?

A person can use a question ladder. This ladder has four levels.

How can a person find the true problem when someone is critical?

People sometimes criticize because they are afraid. The criticism is like noise.
