The rule

A CAPTCHA should only be used when necessary to prevent abuse.

Placing a CAPTCHA on common user actions stops creative work. It also frustrates users.

A CAPTCHA should not be placed on an API endpoint for generating content. This stops a user's creative flow. A CAPTCHA should not be used for existing users logging in. An email one-time password (OTP) is a better security method. A CAPTCHA is good for new account sign-ups. This is a one-time action. A CAPTCHA can be used for suspicious activity. An invisible CAPTCHA should be tried first. A visible CAPTCHA is used only if the invisible one fails. For a free trial that allows sharing output, a CAPTCHA can be used. For example, after three free generations, a CAPTCHA can appear before sharing.

A developer adds a CAPTCHA to the 'generate image' button in an AI art tool. A user tries to create many images quickly. The CAPTCHA appears after every image generation. The user becomes frustrated and stops using the tool.
