Dialysis technicians operate dialysis machines, monitor patients during treatment, and ensure their comfort and safety. They prepare equipment, administer medications, and document vital signs, playing a crucial role in patient care.
A shift centers on readying and testing dialysis machines, mixing dialysate, and preparing the extracorporeal circuit before patients arrive. You connect patients, monitor blood pressure, weight and temperature during treatment, adjust blood flow as ordered, and observe for adverse reactions. Between sessions you disinfect and sterilize machines, record treatment details, and assist with home-dialysis instruction. Much of the work is continuous observation, equipment checks, and swift escalation when complications appear.
