What is a Recording Engineer?
Recording engineers are responsible for capturing and manipulating sound during recording sessions. They set up microphones, adjust levels, and ensure optimal sound quality. They work closely with musicians and producers to achieve the desired sonic aesthetic. Post-session, they may also mix and master the audio.
A recording engineer spends hours indoors preparing and testing gear, choosing and placing microphones, and setting up consoles before performers arrive. During sessions you regulate volume levels and sound quality in real time, log takes and notes, and later separate and combine tracks in mixing and postproduction. Between bookings you troubleshoot equipment, maintain cables and preamps, and prepare the studio so sound problems are caught before the first take.
