Audio Visual Technicians focus on live set-up, signal flow, live sound reinforcement, and onsite recording for events or meetings. You’ll set up gear, switch video sources, and assist directors. Broadcast Technicians often work in TV/radio stations handling transmission and signal standards.
IT people focus on networks, servers, and software deployment. You will touch networking (feeds, streaming) but your tasks are hands-on gear, mixing, troubleshooting equipment, and producing audio/video content, not maintaining enterprise servers.
AI can help with tasks like automatic transcription, noise reduction, captioning, and quick graphic templates using Photoshop or Illustrator plugins. Use AI to speed editing and to draft captions or show scripts.
Don’t trust AI for critical live decisions: it can mis-transcribe or change audio quality unexpectedly. Always verify generated captions, keep original recordings, and follow client policies about recorded content and privacy.
You must understand audio and video signal flow, how to set up and test equipment, and how to switch video sources during live production. Comfortable use of Excel/Access for inventories and Outlook/Teams for coordination is also needed.
Harder skills include troubleshooting complex equipment failures (intermittent signal loss, digital feed sync issues) and live sound reinforcement under pressure. Those come with experience and deliberate practice during rehearsals and real events.
