Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a decor designer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

  • The lowest tenth earn near $53,750; the top tenth near $201,550
  • 113,330 people employed in this occupation

India

the occupation GROUP, not this job · PLFS via ILOSTAT 2025
  • ₹38,298 a month — the median for Professionals, the group this work sits in
  • India publishes pay by broad occupation group, so this covers many jobs besides this one. It is a shape, not a salary.
read this carefullyThese two numbers are not comparable and must not be converted into each other. One is a yearly figure for this job alone; the other is a monthly figure for a whole family of jobs. What travels between them is the pattern, not the amount: experience lifts pay almost everywhere.

Questions people actually ask

You split time between visual work and technical checks. Morning might be moodboards, wireframes, or Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop comps for a page layout. Afternoons often mean building prototypes in HTML/CSS or JavaScript, testing interactions, or updating content in the CMS.

You also run site tests, check server metrics (bandwidth, load), and answer user emails. On release days you monitor performance (traffic, errors) and fix issues found in QA or by users.

Expect Adobe Creative Cloud tools every day: Photoshop for images, InDesign for complex layouts, Illustrator for vectors, and After Effects for animated elements. For prototypes you’ll use HTML, JavaScript, and sometimes AJAX for interactive parts.

For hosting and performance monitoring many teams use Amazon Web Services — EC2 for servers, S3 or CloudFormation for deployments, and tools like Redshift for analytics if the company stores lots of data.

Use AI to speed tasks like generating moodboard ideas, writing small chunks of HTML/JS, or suggesting color palettes — but always check and edit the outputs. AI can hallucinate code or wrong licensing info, so test generated code in a safe staging site before production.

For images, verify copyright and licensing. Keep source files in Adobe apps and record which AI tool and prompt you used. Treat AI as an assistant, not the final designer.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports for this occupation: about 113,330 employed; median pay $104,000 per year; bottom 10% $53,750; top 10% $201,550 per year. These are BLS figures for 2025.

Your actual pay depends on location, portfolio strength, and whether you manage full-stack tasks like AWS deployments or specialize in visuals only.

Start with visual fundamentals in Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and basic motion in After Effects. Simultaneously learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript enough to build prototypes and integrate multimedia.

Practice by making moodboards, storyboards, and small sites. Learn to read simple server metrics and try deploying a site on AWS EC2 or S3 so you understand hosting and performance.

A decor designer focuses on look, visual storytelling, and multimedia — creating moodboards, layouts, and visual elements in Adobe apps. You still prototype in HTML/JS but your main job is the visual surface and brand fit.

A web developer writes production backend code, database queries, and complex server logic. A UX designer emphasizes user research and interaction flow; you do some of that, but your core is visual design and implementation of those visuals.

Top skills: strong Adobe Creative Cloud ability (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), HTML/CSS/JavaScript for prototypes, and practical knowledge of AWS basics (deploying to EC2 or S3) and site performance metrics.

If you need one to focus on first: build a tight portfolio showing real web pages or prototypes — visuals plus working HTML/JS. Hiring managers want to see finished screens and that you can turn them into functioning pages.
