Perform landscape inventories+
Walk the site and record every tree, shrub, lawn patch and hardscape condition, tally species, health issues, invasive plants and irrigation access, then produce an inventory table with specimen photos and maintenance priorities for the contractor by Friday.

Coordinate with clients+
Coordinate the garden redesign with client Sarah Patel: confirm the planting palette, agree the irrigation schedule, note budget adjustments of up to three thousand dollars, and book a site walk with contractor Luis for next Tuesday to finalise phasing.

Design outdoor spaces+
Produce a concept layout for the front yard rehabilitation: place lawn, planting beds, paving and seating so the family can sit in morning sun, specify three low-maintenance specimen trees and a drip irrigation plan, then prepare a client-ready sketch for Thursday.

Create plans and drawings+
Create construction-ready planting and hardscape drawings for the courtyard: produce plan, two sections and a plant schedule with sizes and quantities, check loadings at paving edges, and export a set for the contractor to price by Monday morning.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a landscape designer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You usually split time between site visits and office work. Morning might be a 9–11am site visit to measure, photograph, or check stormwater and erosion control, then a midday client meeting to review plans and cost estimates.

Afternoons are often drafting: AutoCAD or Revit for drawings, ArcGIS for site analysis, and Excel or Access for budgets and schedules. Some days you review contractor work on-site or prepare presentations in InDesign and Photoshop for clients.

Start with AutoCAD for 2D plans and Excel for cost estimates and schedules—those are used every week. Learn ArcGIS basics next for mapping and environmental analysis.

After that pick one graphics tool (Photoshop or InDesign) for client presentations and Acrobat for sharing PDFs. Revit is helpful if you coordinate closely with architects or engineers.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports about 19,600 employed landscape designers. The median pay is $79,870 per year; the lowest tenth is $54,770 and the top tenth is $130,190 (BLS, 2025).

Local pay varies by city, experience, and whether you do design-build work or project management. Freelance or firm owners can earn differently depending on contracts and marketing success.

Use AI for quick site-analysis summaries, generating plant lists, or drafting presentation text—then check everything. AI can miss local codes, drainage math, or invasive-plant lists; you must verify with ArcGIS data, manufacturer specs, and your own calculations.

Never let AI replace site visits, stormwater calculations, or contract reviews. Keep source files and use Acrobat to track changes so you can prove decisions if a client or contractor questions them.

Landscape designers focus on planting plans, small- to mid-scale site design, installation details, and managing contractors. They commonly use AutoCAD, Photoshop, and Excel and may not need a state license.

Landscape architects design large public projects, prepare engineering-level grading and drainage plans, and often need a license. They use Revit, Civil-focused software, and lead multidisciplinary teams on bigger contracts.

Practical drafting and presentation skills (AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign) and basic cost estimating in Excel are core. Employers expect competent site visits—measuring, photographing, and checking erosion control measures.

Also show you can coordinate with clients and subcontractors, and that you know how to research plant materials and products. Knowing ArcGIS or having good project-management habits is a strong plus.

Start with site inventory and environmental analysis in ArcGIS and on-site measurements. Produce concept layouts, then develop detailed AutoCAD or Revit drawings with plant schedules, materials, and specifications.

Create cost estimates in Excel, write specifications and contracts, then prepare presentation PDFs in InDesign/Acrobat for client approval. Finally, manage subcontractors during construction to ensure work follows your drawings and specs.
