Perform XLOOKUP-style lookups

Perform XLOOKUP-style lookups in Google Sheets — with the four heights of help laid out: do it now, make it easier for the next person to accept, work out the right move when you are stuck, and learn the pattern so it stops coming back.

The four heights

The same task, four distances: today's deadline, the next reviewer, the stuck moment, the pattern.

I need matching values from the pricing master for a list of product SKUs in my sales sheet. Pull the unit price and lead time for each SKU in column A from the master on the Inventory tab and put price in column D and lead time in column E. If a SKU is missing show NOT FOUND. Do the lookups so a sheet editor can copy rows without breaking the results.

Improve — make it easier to accept

Before I share this sales sheet with ops, make the lookup results obvious to a reviewer. Put the retrieved price next to the SKU, flag any NOT FOUND rows in red, and surface the source row number from the Inventory tab. Also show a single-cell summary: total missing SKUs and the most common lead time.

Decide — diagnose the stuck moment

Lookup returned many NOT FOUNDs for recent SKUs

We imported last week's new SKUs and the lookup returns NOT FOUND for dozens. Procurement updated the master yesterday but I don't see new SKUs. I worry it's a key from formatting or stray spaces. I can’t call procurement yet. Do I first trim and normalize both lists, re-run the lookup, or ask procurement if they changed SKU formatting? What is the likeliest cause and fastest safe fix?

Become — change the pattern

Repeated SKU mismatches across imports

Every week new SKUs fail to match and I spend hours fixing them. I keep losing time on stray dashes, leading zeros and mixed text/numbers in SKU fields. Propose the habit or small process change that will stop this: how to standardize SKUs at source, what validation to add to the import sheet, and a one-line rule I can push to the sales team so future imports land clean.

Every task here came from the work, not from a feature list — which is why the prompts name what you want done and never the button that does it. The tool changes; the work does not.
