What are Sorting, Matching and Patterns?
These are simple ways to organise and understand objects and ideas. They help children recognise similarities and differences, pair things correctly, and find repeating sequences.
Sorting means putting objects together based on one characteristic such as colour, size, shape or type. We sort to make things neat and easy to find. Always sort by one attribute at a time (for example, only by colour or only by size).
Matching (one-to-one matching) means pairing each item in one group with one item in another group that is the same or goes together (for example, a sock with its pair, a cup with its saucer). Matching builds counting and comparison skills.
Patterns are arrangements that repeat in a regular way. A pattern has a rule that we can continue. We show patterns using objects, colours, shapes or sounds. We often write simple patterns with letters: A for red, B for blue, so ABAB means red-blue-red-blue.
