Questions & Answers

Where things are, in simple words

What are position words?

Position words tell us WHERE something is. In, on, under, behind, beside, near and far are all position words. They help us describe a place without pointing.

What is the difference between IN and ON?

IN means inside something, like a cat in a box. ON means resting on top, like a cat on a box. IN has walls around it. ON sits above.

What does UNDER mean?

Under means below something else. The ball under the table is lower than the table. Under is the opposite of on top.

What does BEHIND mean?

Behind means at the back of something. If Milo hides behind the chair, the chair is in front of him. In front is the opposite of behind.

Is NEAR the same as BESIDE?

They are close but not the same. Beside means right next to something, touching or almost touching. Near means close by, but maybe a few steps away.

Can something be near and far at the same time?

Yes! It depends on what you compare it to. Your shoe may be near your bed but far from the kitchen. Position words always need a second thing to compare with.

Why do we learn position words in maths?

Maths is about describing the world clearly. Position words are your first tools for describing space. Later they help with shapes, maps and geometry.

How can I practise at home?

Play a hiding game. Put a toy somewhere and say where it is. In the basket. Under the bed. Behind the door. Say the word out loud every time.

Topic
Spatial Understanding - Position Words
Learning Objectives
✓Use position words: in, on, under, behind, beside
✓Understand near and far relationships
✓Describe position of objects
Teaching Tips
🏠 Daily Practice
Ask "Where is your bag?" expecting "under the table" or "beside the door". Use real objects in the classroom to demonstrate each position word. Encourage children to describe where they sit, where their books are, and where classroom items are located.
🎮 Interactive Games
Play "Simon Says" with position commands: "Put your hands above your head", "Stand next to your friend", "Sit under the table". Use picture books like "Rosie's Walk" to show prepositions in context. Create treasure hunts where children follow directions using position words.
📚 Storytelling Activities
Read stories that naturally use position words. Ask children to act out scenes: "The cat goes IN the box", "The bird sits ON the branch". Have children create their own stories using position words and draw pictures to illustrate them.
🔍 Assessment Strategies
Observe children during play - do they use position words naturally? Give simple instructions: "Put the ball UNDER the chair". Use worksheets with pictures asking "Where is the cat?" with multiple choice answers. Track progress through the interactive quiz in this lesson.
Hands-On Activities
📦 Box Position Game
Use a large box and a toy. Have children place the toy IN, ON, UNDER, BEHIND, BESIDE, and IN FRONT of the box while saying the position word aloud. This kinesthetic learning reinforces understanding through physical movement.
🗺️ Classroom Map
Create a simple map of the classroom. Ask children to describe where objects are: "The bookshelf is BESIDE the window", "The teacher's desk is IN FRONT of the board". This connects position words to real spatial relationships.
🎯 Near and Far Walk
Take children on a walk around the school. Point out objects that are NEAR (close to us) and FAR (far away). Use gestures and movement to demonstrate: "The tree is NEAR" (walk closer), "The building is FAR" (point far away).

1Gp.01 - Position and Movement
✓Use language of position: in, on, under, next to
✓Describe position from different viewpoints
✓Understand relative position and perspective
Teaching Tips
👁️ Perspective Activities
Cambridge emphasizes different viewpoints. Use the perspective toggle in this lesson to show eye-level vs bird's-eye view. Have children describe the same scene from different positions: "From where I stand, the ball is NEAR, but from the window, it looks FAR."
🔄 Movement Language
Connect position words to movement: "Move the toy FROM the box TO the table", "Walk AROUND the chair", "Go THROUGH the door". This helps children understand position as part of spatial reasoning.
Hands-On Activities
📐 Viewpoint Comparison
Place objects on a table. Have children describe positions from sitting (eye-level) and standing (bird's-eye). Compare: "From my seat, the pencil is BESIDE the book. From above, I can see it's actually IN FRONT."

Spatial Sense - Positional Language
✓Identify positions: above, below, inside, outside
✓Use near/far in context
✓Understand spatial relationships in daily life
Teaching Tips
🏡 Real-World Application
ICSE focuses on practical application. Use everyday scenarios: "The keys are INSIDE the drawer", "The bird is ABOVE the tree", "The car is OUTSIDE the garage". Connect to children's home and school environments.
📊 Visual Learning
Create diagrams showing objects in different positions. Use worksheets with pictures asking children to identify: "Circle the object that is ABOVE", "Color what is INSIDE". Visual reinforcement helps ICSE learners grasp abstract concepts.
Hands-On Activities
🏠 Home Position Hunt
Give children a checklist: "Find something ABOVE your head", "Find something BELOW your feet", "Find something INSIDE a container", "Find something OUTSIDE the classroom". This connects learning to real-world spatial awareness.
