Questions & Answers
More, less and the same
What does comparing mean?
Comparing means looking at two groups and deciding which has more. You do not need numbers to compare. Your eyes can often see it.
What does SAME mean in maths?
Same means both groups have exactly the same amount. Not almost the same. Exactly. Another word for same is equal.
How do I compare without counting?
Match them one to one. Put one apple next to one orange. Keep matching. The group with things left over has more.
Can a big pile have less than a small pile?
Yes! Big things take more space but there may be fewer of them. Three footballs look bigger than eight marbles. Count, do not guess by size.
What is the opposite of more?
Less is the opposite of more. If this group has more, the other group has less. They always come in a pair.
Why do we match one to one?
Matching shows the answer without counting. It also shows exactly how many extra there are. That is the start of subtraction.
What if I cannot tell which has more?
Then count both groups. Numbers give you a sure answer when your eyes are not sure. Counting never lies.
Where do I use comparing in real life?
Sharing snacks with a friend. Checking if everyone got the same. Seeing who has more crayons. Comparing is a fairness skill.
