Equal Groups!

Chapter 10: Seeing Many as the Same

When things are arranged in equal groups, we can count them in a special way! This chapter is about sameness — making sure each group has the same number.

Setting Up for a Party!

Riya is setting up for her birthday party. She puts 4 cookies on each plate. 🍪🍪🍪🍪

"Wait!" barks Milo. "Are all the plates the same?"

Riya checks. "Yes! Each plate has exactly 4 cookies. That's fair!"

⚖️
What Does "Equal" Mean?
Same number in each group

Look at the two groups. Are they equal?

🤔
Do these groups have the same number?
⚖️
"Equal means same number in each group — no more, no less."

Making Equal Groups
Put the same number in each group

Tap items to place them into groups. Make sure each group has the same number!

Make 3 groups of 4

💡 Tip: Count each group after you finish. They should all match!

🔢
Counting Equal Groups
Add the same number again and again

Watch the groups appear one by one. We add the same number each time.

⚠️ Important: For equal groups to work, every group must have the same number. Even one different group breaks the pattern!

A Shortcut Idea
A quicker way to say it

Instead of writing 4 + 4 + 4, we can say:

The Shortcut
"3 groups of 4"

🍎 🍎 🍎 🍎
🍎 🍎 🍎 🍎
4 + 4 + 4 = 12
"3 groups of 4 is 12"

🌟 Note: We're not using any special symbols yet — just the idea of "groups of". This is the foundation for something bigger!

Arrays: Rows and Columns
Another way to see equal groups

An array is equal groups arranged in rows. Each row has the same number!

💡 Arrays are everywhere: Egg cartons, chocolate bars, classroom desks, windows in buildings — all arranged in rows and columns!

Questions & Answers

Seeing many as the same

What are equal groups?

Groups that hold exactly the same number of things. Three plates with 4 biscuits each are equal groups.

How do I check if groups are equal?

Count each group. If every count is the same, they are equal. One different count means they are not.

Why do equal groups matter?

Because they let you count fast. Instead of counting 12 biscuits, you say 3 groups of 4. That idea becomes multiplication.

What if one group has extra?

Then the groups are not equal. You would need to move things around until every group matches.

What is fair sharing?

Fair sharing means giving everyone the same amount. Fair sharing always produces equal groups.

Is 3 groups of 4 the same as 4 groups of 3?

The total is the same, 12. But the picture is different. Three plates of four looks different from four plates of three.

Where do I see equal groups in real life?

Eggs in a tray. Wheels on cars. Legs on chairs. Fingers on hands. Equal groups are everywhere once you look.

How can I practise at home?

Set the table. Give every person the same number of spoons. Then say the sentence. Four people, two spoons each, eight spoons.

🧠 Why Equal Groups Matter
Foundation for multiplication: Understanding "groups of" is the conceptual basis for multiplication — before symbols, before tables.
Fairness and structure: Equal groups connect to real-world ideas of sharing fairly and organising efficiently.
Algebraic thinking: Recognising patterns in equal groups prepares children for later algebraic concepts.
⚠️ What NOT to Do Yet
Don't introduce × symbol: The multiplication sign comes later. Focus on "groups of" language.
Don't drill times tables: This chapter builds understanding, not memorisation.
Don't rush: Conceptual readiness takes time. Speed practice undermines comprehension.
🏠 Home Grouping Activities
Setting the table: "Put 3 pieces of cutlery at each place. How many in total?"
Snack sharing: "Can you divide these 12 grapes into 3 equal groups?"
Toy sorting: "Make 4 groups of 5 cars each. Count the total."
Egg carton counting: Use empty cartons to visualise rows and groups.

💚 Signs of readiness for multiplication: Child can explain why groups must be equal, counts totals confidently via repeated addition, and uses "groups of" language naturally.
