Riya's Day!

☀️ "Good morning!" Riya wakes up when the sun rises.

"What time is it?" asks Milo. 🐕

"The clock tells us!" says Riya, pointing at the clock on the wall.

All day long, the clock helps Riya know when to eat, play, study, and 🌙 sleep!

"The SHORT hand tells the HOUR. The LONG hand helps us know if it's exactly on the hour or half past!"

💡 Remember: Numbers 1-12 go around the clock. The hands move slowly — just like time passes slowly!

Reading Time — O'Clock
When the minute hand points to 12

When the long hand points to 12, we say "o'clock"!

❓

Questions & Answers

Reading the clock

What do the two hands mean?

The short hand shows the hour. The long hand shows the minutes. Short for hours, long for minutes.

How do I read an o'clock time?

When the long hand points straight up at 12, read the hour the short hand points to. That is the o'clock time.

How do I read half past?

When the long hand points down at 6, it is half past. The short hand will be between two numbers. Read the smaller one.

Why does the long hand move faster?

Because it counts minutes and there are sixty in an hour. The short hand only moves one number in that whole time.

How many minutes in an hour?

Sixty. Each number on the clock face is five minutes apart. Five twelves make sixty.

What is the difference between a.m. and p.m.?

a.m. is from midnight to noon, mostly morning. p.m. is from noon to midnight, afternoon and night.

What is a digital clock?

It shows time as numbers, like 7:30. The number before the dots is the hour and after is the minutes.

How can I practise at home?

Say the time out loud at meals, school and bedtime. Guess the time before you look. Then check the clock.

⏰ Why Quarter Past/To Is Delayed
✓ Foundation first: Children need to master o'clock and half past before quarter times.
✓ Visual clarity: Quarter positions require understanding that the hour hand also moves between hours.
✓ Curriculum pacing: All boards introduce quarter times in Class 3, not Class 2.
⚠️ Common Clock-Reading Mistakes
❌ Confusing the hands: Children mix up hour and minute hands. Use "SHORT hand = HOUR, LONG hand = minutes" consistently.
❌ Half past confusion: At half past 4, the hour hand is BETWEEN 4 and 5, not pointing exactly at 4.
❌ Reading 12 as 0: Some children think 12 o'clock means "0 o'clock".
❌ Digital-only exposure: Children who only see digital clocks struggle with analogue. Use both!
🏠 Home Clock Games
🕐 Clock announcer: Ask your child to announce the time at regular intervals throughout the day.
📋 Daily schedule: Create a picture schedule with clock times for breakfast, school, play, dinner, bedtime.
🎮 Time bingo: Draw clocks showing different times and call out times for children to match.
⏰ Set the clock: Use a toy clock or paper plate clock. Say a time and have your child set the hands.
🎬 Movie start: "The movie starts at 7 o'clock. What will the clock look like?"
✅ Correct!
