Questions & Answers

Coins and notes

Why do coins have different values?

So we can make any amount without carrying a huge pile. A few coins of different values can build many totals.

Is a bigger coin always worth more?

No. Size does not decide value. You must read the number printed on the coin.

How do I make an amount in different ways?

Swap equal values. Ten rupees can be one ten rupee coin, or two fives, or five twos. Same value, different coins.

What is change?

Change is the money returned when you pay more than the price. Pay 20 for something costing 15 and you get 5 back.

How do I work out change?

Count up from the price to the amount you gave. From 15 to 20 is 5. That counting up is subtraction.

How do rupees and paise work?

One rupee is a hundred paise. Prices are usually written in rupees, sometimes with paise after a dot.

Why is money good maths practice?

Because it is real. A mistake shows up straight away at the shop. That makes the maths matter.

How can I practise at home?

Play shop. Put price labels on toys, pay with real coins and give change. Say every total out loud.

🪙 Why Change-Making Is Delayed
✓ Foundation first: Children need to confidently count and compare before calculating change.
✓ Real-world readiness: At this age, children typically receive exact money or don't handle change independently.
✓ Curriculum pacing: Change-making and paise are introduced in Class 3 across all boards.
⚠️ Common Money Mistakes
❌ Counting coins instead of value: "I have 5 coins!" — but what's the total value? Focus on value, not quantity.
❌ Confusing coin size with value: A bigger coin isn't always worth more. ₹2 coin is smaller than ₹1 coin!
❌ Forgetting equivalent values: Two ₹5 coins = one ₹10 coin. Practice equivalence often.
🏠 Home Money Games
🛒 Play shop: Set up a pretend shop with price tags. Let your child be the shopkeeper or buyer.
🪙 Coin sorting: Empty a coin jar and sort by denomination. Count each pile!
🐷 Piggy bank math: "You have ₹12. You want a toy for ₹20. How much more do you need?"
🧾 Real shopping: At a shop, show the child the total and let them help count the money.
💰 Saving goals: Set a small savings goal. Track progress: "You have ₹15. You need ₹25. How much more?"
✅ Correct!
