Sorting Day!

Riya is organising the classroom library! 📚

"This shelf has 37 books and that one has 45 books."

Milo tilts his head. "Which shelf has more books? How do you know?"

Riya smiles. "I don't guess — I compare the tens first!"

🧠
Quick Recall!
Every number has tens and ones

Before we compare, let's break down two numbers into tens and ones.

37
3 tens + 7 ones
vs
45
4 tens + 5 ones

💡 Remember: The tens digit tells us how many groups of 10. The ones digit tells us the leftover singles!

62 is greater than 45

💡 When tens are different, we don't even need to look at the ones! The tens decide everything.

Questions & Answers

Which number is bigger

How do I compare two numbers?

Start with the tens. The number with more tens is bigger. If the tens are equal, compare the ones.

Why do I look at the tens first?

Because one ten is worth ten ones. Even nine loose ones cannot beat one extra bundle. Tens decide first.

What do the signs greater than and less than mean?

They point at the smaller number. The wide open side faces the bigger number. Think of a hungry mouth eating the bigger amount.

What does equal mean?

Equal means exactly the same amount on both sides. Not close. Exactly. We write it with the equals sign.

Is 39 or 41 bigger?

41 is bigger. It has 4 tens while 39 has only 3. The 9 looks large but it is only nine loose ones.

What does ordering numbers mean?

Ordering means arranging numbers from smallest to biggest, or biggest to smallest. You compare them two at a time.

Can two different numbers be equal?

No. If the numbers are written differently they are different amounts. But 40 plus 2 and 42 are two ways to write the same number.

Where do I compare numbers in real life?

Prices in a shop. Scores in a game. Pages in a book. House numbers on a street. Comparing helps you choose.
