The Choice Workshop

Chapter 10: Time, Money & Planning

"Math helps me plan my time and money so I can make better choices."
🧠Three Truths About Life
⏳Time always moves forward. We can't get it back once it's gone.
💰Money is limited. We can't buy everything we want.
🌟Good choices matter more than fast answers. Think before you act.

Welcome to the Choice Workshop!

Professor Plan runs a very special workshop. 📋

"In my workshop, we learn to make wise choices!"

His assistant Ollie the owl watches the clock carefully. "Time waits for no one, so plan ahead!"

Together, they'll teach you how to plan your time and spend wisely — using math as your guide.

Understanding Time as Flow
Hours pass, activities take time, order matters
1
🌊 Time Flows Like a River
Time doesn't wait for us. Every hour that passes is gone forever.

• Morning 🌅 — When the day begins
• Afternoon ☀️ — The middle of the day
• Evening 🌆 — When the day winds down

Understanding time helps us plan what we can do!

🤔 Thinking About Duration
Different activities take different amounts of time:

• Brushing teeth: about 2 minutes
• Eating lunch: about 30 minutes
• A movie: about 2 hours
• A school day: about 6 hours

Knowing how long things take helps us plan our day!

Money as Exchange
Money represents value. Buying means giving something up.
4
🔄 The Exchange Idea
Money is not just numbers — it represents choices.

When you spend ₹50 on a toy, you're saying:
"I want this toy MORE than ₹50 worth of other things."

Every purchase is a trade-off. You get something, but you give something up.

Understanding Change
Why do we get money back? What does it mean?
6
🤔 What Is Change?
When you give more money than something costs, you get the extra back.

This extra money is called change.

Change = Money Given − Cost of Item

🧠 Learning from Choices
The best planners review their decisions.

After making a plan, we can ask:
• What worked well?
• What could be better?
• What would I do differently?

This is called reflective thinking — a superpower for life!

🧩 Everything Connects
Time and money problems use skills from many chapters:

• Addition & Subtraction — calculating totals and change
• Division & Remainders — sharing fairly, splitting costs
• Estimation — "about how much?" before exact math
• Measurement — hours, minutes, rupees, paise

This is where all your math skills come together!

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning with time and money

Why are time and money taught together?

Because both are limited resources that force choices. Planning a day and planning a budget use the same reasoning. Teaching them together makes the shared idea of trade offs visible.

Why is time arithmetic harder than ordinary arithmetic?

Because time is not base ten. Sixty minutes make an hour, not a hundred. Children who apply column addition to 45 minutes plus 30 minutes get 75 and stop, instead of seeing 1 hour 15 minutes.

What is the easiest reliable way to find elapsed time?

Count forward in friendly jumps. From 10:40, jump 20 minutes to 11:00, then to the end time. Counting up avoids nearly every mistake that the subtraction method invites.

How do I teach the 24 hour clock?

Anchor it at noon. After 12 noon, add 12 to the hour. Three in the afternoon becomes 15:00. Practise reading it on phones, tickets and timetables where children already meet it.

What is a trade off and why does this chapter emphasise it?

A trade off means that choosing one thing costs you another. Spend on this and you cannot spend on that. It turns arithmetic into decision making, which is what money and time genuinely are.

How much money handling should a Class 3 child do?

As much as is practical and safe. Let them pay, count change and check the bill. Real transactions teach estimation, subtraction and attention in a way worksheets cannot match.

How do I explain saving?

As a choice to delay. Not buying something small today lets you buy something larger later. Keep a visible jar or chart so the arithmetic of growth is seen every day.

What should practice look like at home?

Plan something together with a real limit. A birthday budget, a Sunday timetable, a small shopping list. Let the plan meet reality and then discuss what needed adjusting.

▼

This chapter transforms math into life skills. Time and money are treated as limited resources requiring judgment — not calculation drills.

✅ Signs of True Mastery

  • Asks "How long will this take?" before starting activities
  • Understands that spending means giving something up
  • Can identify when a plan "doesn't fit" constraints
  • Reviews choices and suggests improvements
  • Uses estimation before exact calculation

❌ What NOT to Do

  • ✗ Drill clock reading without context
  • ✗ Use fake shopping with unlimited money
  • ✗ Focus on change-making algorithms before meaning
  • ✗ Rush through problems without reflection
  • ✗ Treat time and money as abstract numbers

💡 Why This Approach?

Time and money are where math meets consequence. Wrong answers matter in real life. This chapter builds responsibility thinking.

Regret Replay Mode teaches reflective planning — a skill that separates effective adults from struggling ones.

Constraint awareness (limited time, limited money) prepares children for real decision-making.

📚 Board Alignment

CBSE: Time & Money — reading clocks, calculating durations, making change, word problems

ICSE: Time, Money & Everyday Math — practical applications, planning scenarios

Cambridge: Stage 3 — Time intervals, money transactions, problem-solving with constraints

🎯 Chapter Completion Signal

This chapter is complete when the child can say:

"Math helps me plan my time and money so I can make better choices."

🎉Great job!
