You find a wallet with $200 cash. There is an ID inside. No one saw you pick
it up. There are no cameras. What do you do?
๐ญ How to Think About This
Integrity is what you do when no one is watching. It is the alignment between
your Public Self (Reputation) and your Private Self (Character).
Make your choice:
You might tell yourself, "They probably have plenty of money," or "I need it
more." This is called Rationalization. It is how good people
convince themselves to do bad things.
Failed.
You sold your self-respect for $200. Cheap price.
Returning the wallet feels "good enough." But taking the cash is still stealing.
You are trying to be a "Good person" and a "Thief" at the same time. You can't
be both.
Inconsistent.
This is the "Slippery Slope." Small dishonisties lead to big ones.
The only person you truly have to live with is yourself. Knowing you did the
right thing builds "Self-Efficacy" and confidence. You become a person who can
be trusted.
Correct. Total Integrity.
The Insight: Reputation is what others think of you.
Character is who you actually are. Character is built in the dark.
The Strategy: Act as if everything you do will be printed on
the front page of the newspaper tomorrow.
