What is a Garment Technologist?
Garment technologists are the bridge between design and production. They analyze designs, create specifications, and troubleshoot issues to ensure garments meet quality and fit standards. They work closely with designers, pattern makers, and manufacturers.
You split time between bench diagnostics and the production floor: setting up and operating test equipment, running wear and electrical tests on trims, inspecting stitch formation and thread tension, replacing defective components, and adjusting control circuits or sensors. You read wiring diagrams and record system logs to make failures reproducible. Between tests you coordinate with suppliers and quality to keep assembly lines meeting specs.
