What is a Prosthetist?
Prosthetists evaluate patients' needs, design and fabricate custom prosthetic devices, and fit and adjust these devices to ensure optimal comfort and function. They work closely with patients to provide training and support in using their prostheses. They collaborate with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.
You spend days measuring limbs, interviewing patients, and making plaster casts to shape sockets. Much of the work is fit-testing and adjusting devices on patients, supervising technicians during fabrication, and selecting materials and components to match design and function. Between fittings you maintain detailed patient records and coach users on donning, cleaning, and gait practice to make the device work in daily life.
