What is a Pipefitter?
Pipefitters install, assemble, fabricate, maintain, and repair piping systems. These systems carry water, steam, chemicals, and fuel in heating, cooling, lubricating, and other process piping systems. They interpret blueprints, select appropriate materials, and use specialized tools to cut, thread, and weld pipes.
A pipefitter’s shift revolves around measuring, locating, and marking pipe routes; cutting, threading, and assembling sections; and installing fittings, valves, and supports to blueprint specifications. You spend most of the day standing and using hand tools, hydrostatic testing lines, isolating sections with valve keys, directing helpers on installation, and inspecting systems for leaks before and after pressurization.
