चावल की रोटियाँ

एक गरीब आदमी एक दुकानदार की दुकान पर पक रहे खाने की खुशबू का मज़ा लेता है, पर खाता कुछ नहीं। फिर भी लालची दुकानदार खुशबू सूँघने के बदले उससे पैसे माँगता है। मामला एक समझदार न्यायाधीश के पास पहुँचता है, जो उस आदमी से सिक्के खनकवाता है ताकि दुकानदार उनकी आवाज़ सुन सके। न्यायाधीश फैसला देता है कि खाने की खुशबू का दाम पैसों की आवाज़ ही है। लालची दुकानदार को कुछ नहीं मिलता और उसे अच्छी सीख मिल जाती है।

A poor man enjoys the smell of food cooking at a shopkeeper's stall but does not eat anything. The greedy shopkeeper still demands money from him for smelling the food. The matter goes to a wise judge, who makes the man jingle some coins so the shopkeeper can hear their sound. The judge rules that the price of the smell of food is the sound of money. The greedy shopkeeper gets nothing and learns his lesson.

Greed leads to nothing. Just as one cannot really 'eat' a smell, a greedy person who tries to take unfair money also gets only an empty reward, like the mere sound of coins.
