राख की रस्सी

तिब्बत में एक राजा को बूढ़े लोग पसंद नहीं थे और उसने आदेश दिया कि सब बूढ़ों को दूर भेज दिया जाए। एक प्रेमी नौजवान ने अपनी बूढ़ी माँ को दूर भेजने के बजाय एक गुफा में छिपा लिया। जब एक राक्षस ने राज्य को असंभव पहेलियों से — जैसे राख की रस्सी बनाने से — डराया, तो नौजवान ने अपनी समझदार माँ की बताई चतुर तरकीबों से सारी पहेलियाँ हल कर दीं। जब राजा को पता चला कि एक बूढ़ी स्त्री की बुद्धि ने राज्य बचाया है, तो उसे अपनी ग़लती का एहसास हुआ; उसने क्रूर नियम रद्द कर दिया और बूढ़ों का आदर करने लगा।

In Tibet, a king disliked old people and ordered that they all be sent away. A loving young man hid his old mother in a cave instead. When a giant threatened the kingdom with impossible puzzles — like making a rope of ash — the young man solved them all with clever ideas given by his wise mother. When the king learned that an old woman's wisdom had saved the kingdom, he realised his mistake, cancelled the cruel rule, and began to respect old people.

Old people are full of experience and wisdom; they should be respected, not cast aside.
