What is a port? A port is a coastal or riverside place where ships load and unload goods and passengers. Ports are nodes that connect inland areas with international markets and so help towns grow into cities.
How colonialism changed ports and created port-cities
- Colonial powers transformed selected coastal sites into export-oriented gateways. They improved harbours, built docks, warehouses and rail links so raw materials (cotton, indigo, jute, tea, spices) could be shipped to Europe.

Cotton mills: From the mid-19th century Bombay became the heart of India’s cotton textile industry. Mills were concentrated in areas known as Girangaon (the mill village) — mills produced textiles, employed thousands of workers, and created dense neighbourhoods around them. Mill life shaped the city’s social and economic structure: working-class housing, labour movements, and related services (transport, food, small trade).
Docks and port: The deep natural harbour led to construction of docks and a port infrastructure to handle growing international trade. Dockyards and the Port Trust developed berths, warehousing and customs facilities; the port attracted shipping companies, traders, and port-related jobs. The railways and road links to the port made the city a gateway for exports (cotton, opium earlier) and imports.
Suburbs: Rapid central-city growth and rising land prices pushed residential and industrial expansion into suburbs. The suburban railway (first passenger rail line in 1853 between Bombay and Thane) and later road links enabled commuting. Areas such as Byculla, Parel, Lower Parel, Dadar, Bandra, and Kurla developed as mill or residential suburbs. Calcutta (Kolkata) as the administrative capital: From the late 18th century Calcutta became the main administrative and political centre of British India. Jute mills and the jute economy: Bengal (including present-day Bangladesh and West Bengal) was the world’s main jute-growing region. Jute arriving by river from the delta was processed in mills built along the riverbanks where water and transport were available. Jute was converted into sacks (gunny), ropes, carpet backing and many other products demanded globally (for agriculture, shipping and packaging). The mills drew large numbers of rural labourers into the city, producing dense industrial suburbs and factory towns along the riverbanks. Decline and change: By the early 20th century political changes (the capital moved to Delhi in 1911), global shifts in trade, partition (1947) cutting jute-growing areas away from mills, and later competition and mechanisation all altered Calcutta’s role. Many mills declined or closed; the port remained important but had to modernise. The pattern of an administrative centre combined with riverine industry and docks is a classic example of colonial urbanism.

Overview
Madras (now Chennai) began as a small coastal settlement that became one of the principal British trading stations in south India. The English East India Company established Fort St. George (1639–1640) as a fortified trading post. Over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Madras grew into the administrative centre of the Madras Presidency and an important port handling exports and imports between the Coromandel Coast and global markets.
Madras as a presidency capital
- The Madras Presidency was the British administrative unit that covered much of southern India. Madras city was the seat of the Presidency government and hosted key colonial institutions: the governor’s offices, revenue administration, courts and military barracks.

What these towns were: Apart from the big colonial cities (like Calcutta, Bombay and Madras), Europeans established many smaller colonial towns and port centres along India’s coast. These were places where European trading companies built factories, warehouses, forts and small settlements to buy local produce (textiles, spices, salt, indigo, cotton, rice, timber) and load them on ships for Europe or other Asian markets.
Why they developed:
- Strategic maritime location on natural harbours or river mouths made loading and sailing easier.
- High demand in Europe for Indian goods encouraged investment in trading posts.
- Local craft production (weaving, dyeing, shipbuilding) provided goods for export.

They also brought colonial legal systems, new taxes and infrastructure (roads, warehouses, docks) that changed traditional economic life.

Under colonialism, the modern city was not just an economic and administrative centre but also a stage for social life. Leisure and public life were organised in ways that reflected colonial power, social hierarchy and racial segregation. Europeans created exclusive spaces for recreation and sociability: clubs, racecourses, theatres, promenades and parks. These were often located in the most desirable, well-serviced parts of the city, signalling status and control.
Clubs: Clubs were key institutions for European male social life. They combined dining, sport, reading rooms, and lodging. Most clubs were explicitly European-only or had restrictive membership rules, reinforcing social distance. Clubs helped reproduce colonial identity and networks of power. In response, Indians gradually set up their own clubs and associations, which became centres for social reform and political discussion.
Parks and promenades: Parks (formal gardens, maidaans, promenades along rivers) provided recreational space and a visible sign of 'civilised' urban order. They were used for walking, military parades, public ceremonies, and leisure. Access and behaviour in parks were controlled by policing and municipal regulations. Some parks were designed to visually beautify the city and to frame public buildings.
Public buildings: The colonial city invested heavily in large public buildings—railway stations, post offices, municipal offices, courts, hospitals, schools, museums and monuments. Architecturally, these buildings mixed European styles (Victorian Gothic, Neoclassical) with local forms (leading to Indo-Saracenic style). They served practical functions but also symbolised the authority and permanence of colonial rule.
Social and political effects: The layout and institutions of leisure and public life made social divisions visible—race, class and gender. While Europeans enjoyed exclusive access to many facilities, Indians were often confined to different neighbourhoods and recreational spaces. Over time Indians used clubs, schools, and public meetings to build networks for reform and nationalism, reclaiming some urban spaces for political and cultural purposes.
Legacy: Many colonial clubs, parks and public buildings survive today as historic landmarks (re-purposed museums, parks, municipal buildings). Their architecture and spatial patterns continue to shape modern Indian cities, and debates about access and heritage remain important.
