Overview

About the author: Anupam Mishra (1948-2016) was a noted Gandhian, environmentalist, writer and water conservationist. Born in Wardha, Maharashtra, he was associated for decades with the Gandhi Peace Foundation in Delhi. He travelled extensively through the desert districts of Rajasthan, studying the indigenous, community-based methods by which people there have harvested and stored rainwater for centuries. His widely acclaimed books 'Aaj Bhi Khare Hain Talab' (The Ponds Are Still Relevant) and 'Rajasthan Ki Rajat Boondein' (The Radiant Drops of Rajasthan) document this traditional water-management wisdom. Written in a lucid, flowing, almost poetic prose, his work celebrates folk technology, the dignity of common artisans, and the deep ecological intelligence of ordinary villagers. He refused to copyright his books so that this knowledge could spread freely, and he received the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar for his environmental contribution.
📖 Detailed Explanation
The lesson begins by introducing the heart of Rajasthan's water-wisdom: the 'kunds' or 'kundis' (covered underground tanks) found in the great Indira Gandhi Canal region of Churu, Bikaner and Jaisalmer. The author explains that in this sandy desert, where surface water is scarce and the underground water is often brackish (salty) and undrinkable, people learnt to collect and store the only sweet water available to them - rainwater. The kund is a marvel of folk engineering that catches rain falling on a carefully prepared catchment and channels it into a covered underground tank.

The author describes the surprising geology of the region. Beneath the sand lies a layer of khadin or, more importantly, a thin band of gypsum (khadi/khadin patti) - a strip of chalky rock at a certain depth. Rainwater that seeps into the sand travels downward until it meets this gypsum layer, which stops it from sinking further and from mixing with the deep salty groundwater. The kunई is dug precisely up to this gypsum band, so that the sweet rainwater collected in the sand all around slowly trickles sideways into the narrow well and is preserved separately from the brackish water below. This is why the kund's water remains sweet while the area's regular wells are salty.

A central theme of the lesson is the unique skill and dignity of the 'chejaro' or 'chejara' - the special caste/community of expert diggers who build the kunई. Digging a kunई is extremely difficult: it is very deep (often 30-60 hands deep) yet very narrow - only three to four hands wide - so that the precious gypsum layer is disturbed as little as possible and so the mouth can be covered. The narrowness, the depth and the rising heat and suffocation at the bottom make the work dangerous. The chejaro works at the bottom while helpers above pull up the excavated earth in a leather bucket.

The author beautifully describes the ingenious techniques the chejaro use to survive and work in the deep, hot, airless pit. To fight the heat and lack of air at the bottom, people standing at the top throw down fistfuls of sand and pour multani mitti (fuller's earth); the falling sand stirs the hot air and creates a slight circulation so the digger can breathe. When the kunई becomes very deep, the diggers' shouted instructions cannot be heard clearly, so they communicate through a special coded language of sounds and signals understood between the bottom and the top - a remarkable folk system of communication.

The lesson also explains the construction details and the social organisation around the kunई. The mouth of the kunई is finished with a wheel-like wooden or stone structure and is kept covered with a small lid (dhakkan) to prevent dust, animals and impurities and to slow evaporation. Water is drawn out with a small pot or bucket. Importantly, although the catchment land (agor) and the area belong to the whole village, the kunई itself is private property of the family that has it dug, and there can be many kunई close together, each tapping water from the same broad band of sand - a fine example of community sharing balanced with private effort.

In its concluding vision, the lesson presents the kunई not merely as a technical structure but as a symbol of a self-reliant, sustainable culture. The author honours the unnamed, untaught engineers of the desert - the simple villagers and chejaro who, without modern science, solved the most difficult problem of survival in one of the driest regions on earth. The 'silver drops' (rajat boondein) of the title are the precious raindrops they save with such care and respect. The piece is finally a tribute to community wisdom, frugality, and a harmonious relationship between human beings and a harsh environment - values that modern, water-wasteful society urgently needs to relearn.

📝 Summary
'Rajasthan Ki Rajat Boondein' describes the remarkable indigenous water-harvesting system of the Rajasthan desert, centred on the 'kunई' - a very deep but extremely narrow covered well that collects sweet rainwater. In this arid land the deep groundwater is salty and undrinkable; only rain is sweet. Rainwater seeping through the sand is stopped by a hidden layer of gypsum (khadi) and stored in the sand above it, from where it slowly trickles into the kunई. The narrow kunई is dug by a special skilled community, the chejaro, who endure great heat, suffocation and danger deep underground, using clever folk techniques - throwing sand to circulate air and a coded sound-language to communicate with those above. The kunई's mouth is kept covered to protect the water and reduce evaporation. Though the catchment land is shared by the whole village, each kunई is private property. Through the kunई, Anupam Mishra celebrates the genius, frugality and ecological wisdom of ordinary desert folk who, without modern technology, learnt to save every precious 'silver drop' of rain - a lesson in sustainable living for the modern world.

The title 'Rajasthan Ki Rajat Boondein' (The Silver Drops of Rajasthan) is apt and poetic. In a parched desert, raindrops are as precious and shining as silver. The 'silver drops' are the sweet rainwater so carefully saved in the kunई, and metaphorically also the priceless folk wisdom and labour of the desert people that makes this saving possible. The title captures both the literal preciousness of water and the shining value of traditional knowledge.

The kunई is a covered well dug in the sandy desert to harvest sweet rainwater. Rainwater falling on the catchment (agor) seeps into the sand and travels down until it meets a thin underground band of gypsum (khadi), which stops it from sinking into the deep salty groundwater. This sweet water is stored in the broad belt of sand above the gypsum. The kunई is dug down to exactly this gypsum layer, but it is kept extremely narrow - only three or four hands wide though thirty to sixty hands deep - so that the gypsum is disturbed as little as possible and the mouth can be covered. The narrow shape, depth, heat and suffocation make digging very hard, so a special skilled community, the chejaro, do it, while helpers above pull up the earth in leather buckets, throw down sand for ventilation, and communicate by a coded sound-language. The mouth is finished with a wheel-like rim and kept covered with a lid to stop dust, animals and evaporation. From the surrounding sand the sweet water slowly trickles sideways into the well and is drawn out with a small pot. The kunई is a marvel of indigenous engineering because, without any modern science or instruments, the desert people understood the geology of sand and gypsum, designed a structure that separates sweet water from salt water, solved problems of air and communication deep underground, and balanced shared catchment land with private ownership - achieving sustainable survival in one of the harshest environments on earth.

Through this lesson Anupam Mishra conveys deep respect for water, for traditional knowledge, and for the dignity of common people's labour. He shows that the simple, unlettered villagers and chejaro of Rajasthan were brilliant engineers who solved the hardest problem of desert survival through patience, frugality and a profound understanding of nature. The kunई teaches the values of conservation, sustainability, community cooperation balanced with personal effort, and living in harmony with the environment rather than exploiting it. The 'silver drops' remind us that water is precious and must never be wasted. Today, when cities face acute water shortages, groundwater is over-pumped, and modern development often ignores ecological balance, this message is urgently relevant: the wisdom of these humble desert communities offers a tested model of sustainable water management that the modern, wasteful world must humbly relearn.

Because the deep groundwater of the desert is brackish (khara) - salty and therefore unfit for drinking.

The gypsum layer stops the rainwater seeping through the sand from sinking further into the salty groundwater, holding the sweet water above it so it can trickle into the kunई.

The kunई preserves sweet rainwater, which is precious because in the desert it is the only sweet, drinkable water available amid otherwise salty water.
