Vasant Poem

Overview

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

First Pad: Little Krishna says to his mother, 'Mother, I have not eaten the butter! These friends of mine, just for fun, have together smeared it on my mouth. You yourself see — the pot is hanging high up on the sling (chheeka). Tell me, with my tiny little hands, how could I have reached it?' Then, wiping the curd off his mouth, he cleverly hid the leaf-cup (dona of butter) behind his back. Seeing this, Yashoda threw away the stick (she had picked up) and, smiling, hugged Shyam (Krishna) to her heart. Surdas says — this childish play and joy enchanted Yashoda's mind, and Krishna showed her the glory of devotion. This great happiness that mother Yashoda received, even Lord Shiva and Brahma (Birinchi) could not attain.

Second Pad: Krishna asks his mother, 'Mother, when will my hair-braid (choti) grow? I have drunk milk so many times, yet it is still so small! You keep saying that, like Balaram's braid, it too will become long and thick — that it will trail on the ground like a serpent while being combed, braided and washed. (But) you keep making me drink only plain milk, taking great pains, and you do not give me butter and bread (maakhan-roti).' Surdas prays — may the two brothers, the pair of Hari (Krishna) and Haladhar (Balaram), live long.

📝 Summary

These two pads by Surdas, taken from the Vatsalya Ras, depict the innocent childhood of Krishna. In the first pad, mother Yashoda catches little Krishna stealing butter. Krishna cleverly denies it, claiming his friends smeared butter on his mouth for fun and that the pot was hung too high for his tiny hands to reach — all while hiding the leaf-cup of butter behind his back. Charmed by his innocence and clever excuses, Yashoda throws away her stick and lovingly hugs him; Surdas adds that even gods like Shiva and Brahma could not get the joy Yashoda received. In the second pad, Krishna childishly complains that his hair-braid is not growing despite drinking so much milk, while his mother insists it will grow long like Balaram's. He grumbles that she only makes him drink plain milk instead of giving him butter and bread. The poet ends with a blessing for the long life of the two brothers, Krishna and Balaram.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of these pads is the tender depiction of Krishna's baal-leela (childhood pranks) and a mother's boundless, selfless love (vatsalya) for her child. Through a child's innocent lies, stubbornness and clever excuses, Surdas captures the universal sweetness of childhood and the depth of motherly affection.

  • The innocence and stubbornness of childhood: Krishna's clever excuses, his denial of stealing butter, and his childish complaint about his small braid show the natural innocence, mischief and baal-hath (child's stubbornness) of every child.

  • Devotion through love (bhakti): Surdas shows that the simple, loving bond between Yashoda and Krishna is itself the highest form of devotion — a joy greater than what even gods like Shiva and Brahma could attain.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The message of the poem is that a child's innocence and a mother's love are among the most beautiful and divine things in the world. True devotion lies not in grand rituals but in pure, simple love — even God Himself delights in the affection of a loving mother.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Soor ke Pad' (Pads of Surdas) is apt because these are two devotional songs (pads) composed by the great poet Surdas. A 'pad' is a short lyrical composition meant to be sung, and both these compositions sing of Krishna's childhood in sweet Brajbhasha. Since they are Surdas's own creations celebrating Krishna's baal-leela, the title rightly names both the form (pad) and the poet (Soor).

🪄 Literary Devices

Anupras (Alliteration) /

The repeated 'm' sound (mod, man, mohyau) creates a musical, flowing effect typical of Surdas's pads.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Describe how Surdas portrays the childhood pranks (baal-leela) of Krishna in these two pads.

Surdas, the master poet of vatsalya, paints Krishna as a completely ordinary, lovable child. In the first pad, little Krishna is caught with butter on his mouth, but instead of confessing he weaves a clever defence — blaming his friends and arguing that his tiny hands could not reach the pot hung high on the sling, all while secretly hiding the leaf-cup of butter behind his back. This mix of guilt, cleverness and innocence is so charming that his mother forgets her anger. In the second pad, Krishna shows childish stubbornness (baal-hath): he frets that his braid is not growing despite all the milk he drinks, and complains that his mother gives him plain milk instead of the butter and bread he loves. Through such everyday scenes, simple Brajbhasha and tender emotion, Surdas makes the divine Krishna feel like every mother's mischievous little son, capturing the universal sweetness of childhood.

Q. How do these pads express the bond between Yashoda and Krishna and the idea of devotion?

The bond between Yashoda and Krishna is one of pure, selfless motherly love. Yashoda does not see Krishna as God but as her naughty little son, and Krishna treats her with the trust and stubbornness of an ordinary child — hiding the truth, making excuses, and complaining about milk and butter. When she catches him stealing, her love instantly dissolves her anger and she hugs him. Surdas turns this tender relationship into a vision of the highest devotion: he declares that the happiness Yashoda receives from loving Krishna is greater than what gods like Shiva and Brahma could attain through worship. The message is that bhakti born of pure, loving emotion (prem-bhakti) is superior to formal ritual. The poet's closing blessing for the long life of both brothers, Hari and Haladhar, expresses his own devotion and affection. Thus the pads beautifully blend vatsalya (parental love) with bhakti (devotion).
