About the author: The author beautifully captures the essence of wind, illustrating its strength and gentleness, and how it influences the world around us with poetic simplicity.
📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
Don't break the shutters of the windows.
Don't scatter the papers.
Don't throw down the books on the shelf.
There, look what you did — you threw them all down.
You tore the pages of the books.
You brought rain again.
You're very clever at poking fun at weaklings.
In the opening stanza the poet directly addresses the wind and politely requests it to come gently. He pleads with it not to break the shutters of the windows, not to scatter the loose papers and not to knock the books off the shelf. But before he can finish, the wind has already done its damage — it has flung everything down, torn the pages of the books and brought rain along with it. The poet remarks that the wind is very skilled at mocking and troubling weak, frail things. Here the wind stands for the troubles and challenges of life that easily disturb those who are not strong.

crumbling wood, crumbling bodies, crumbling lives,
crumbling hearts —
the wind god winnows and crushes them all.
In the second stanza the poet describes the destructive power of the wind upon everything that is weak. The wind brings down frail, crumbling houses along with their weak doors, rafters and wood. It does not stop at material things — it also crushes weak bodies, weak lives and weak hearts. The poet imagines the wind as a 'wind god' who winnows (like separating grain from chaff) and crushes everything that is feeble. The repeated word 'crumbling' stresses how easily fragile things collapse before the force of the wind, which symbolises the hardships of life that destroy the weak.

So, come, let's build strong homes,
Let's joint the doors firmly.
Practise to firm the body.
Make the heart steadfast.
Do these, and the wind will be friends with us.
In the third stanza the poet realises that it is useless to plead with the wind, because it will never obey our requests. Therefore, instead of complaining, he suggests a practical solution: we must make ourselves strong. He urges everyone to build strong, sturdy houses and to fix the doors firmly so that the wind cannot break them. He also advises us to make our bodies strong through practice and to make our hearts steadfast and courageous. If we do all these things, the wind will no longer be our enemy — it will become our friend. The message is that we should prepare ourselves to face difficulties bravely rather than fearing them.

He makes strong fires roar and flourish.
His friendship is good.
We praise him every day.
In the final stanza the poet illustrates his message with the example of fire. The wind blows out and extinguishes weak, feeble fires, but it makes strong fires roar louder and burn brighter. In the same way, life's hardships destroy weak people but make strong, determined people even stronger. The poet concludes that the friendship of the wind is good and worthwhile, and so we praise the wind every single day. The wind, representing adversity, becomes a friend only to those who are strong enough to withstand it.

📝 Summary
The poem 'Wind' by Subramania Bharati begins with the poet gently requesting the wind not to be destructive — not to break the shutters, scatter the papers or tear the books. But the wind ignores him and creates havoc, mocking everything that is weak. The poet observes that the wind crushes all frail and crumbling things: weak houses, doors, bodies, lives and hearts. Realising that the wind will never obey pleas, he advises a wiser course — we must build strong houses, fix the doors firmly, strengthen our bodies and make our hearts steadfast. Then the wind will become our friend instead of our foe. Just as the wind blows out a weak fire but makes a strong fire blaze brighter, life's challenges destroy the weak but strengthen the strong. The poet ends by praising the wind, treating it as a symbol of the difficulties that we must face with courage and inner strength.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the poem is that we should not fear the difficulties and hardships of life, symbolised by the wind, but instead build inner and outer strength to face them. The poem teaches that adversity destroys the weak but strengthens the strong; therefore, by making our bodies sturdy and our hearts steadfast, we can turn even our challenges into friends. Courage, self-confidence and resilience are the keys to overcoming all obstacles.

Instead of fearing or complaining about our problems, we should build physical and mental strength, stay confident and steadfast, and face every challenge with courage. When we are strong, our very troubles become our friends and help us grow.

The title 'Wind' is apt and meaningful because the entire poem is built around the wind, which the poet addresses directly from the first line to the last. On the surface the poem describes the physical wind that breaks shutters, scatters papers and topples weak houses. On a deeper level, however, the wind is a powerful symbol of the hardships, obstacles and challenges of life. By naming the poem 'Wind', the poet draws our attention to this central image and its dual nature — destroyer of the weak and friend of the strong. The title therefore perfectly captures both the literal subject and the underlying philosophical message of the poem.

Subramania Bharati's poem 'Wind' uses the wind as a symbol of the difficulties, obstacles and hardships of life. In the beginning the poet politely begs the wind to be gentle and not break the shutters or scatter his papers and books, just as we often wish that troubles would not disturb us. But the wind ignores his pleas and crushes everything weak — frail houses, doors, rafters, bodies, lives and hearts. This shows that hardships do not yield to complaints; they destroy whoever is weak. Realising this, the poet changes his attitude. Instead of asking the wind to spare him, he resolves to become strong. He advises us to build sturdy homes, fix the doors firmly, strengthen our bodies and make our hearts steadfast. The example of fire makes the message clear: the wind blows out a weak fire but makes a strong fire roar. Likewise, the strong and determined grow even stronger through challenges, while the weak are crushed. The poem therefore teaches a profound life lesson — we should not fear or run away from problems, but prepare ourselves physically and mentally to face them with courage and confidence. When we are strong, even our troubles become our friends, and so the poet praises the wind every day.

Throughout the poem, Subramania Bharati builds a sharp contrast between weak things and strong things to drive home his central message. On the side of weakness, he describes crumbling houses, crumbling doors, rafters, wood, bodies, lives and hearts — all of which the wind easily winnows and crushes. He also says the wind is clever at poking fun at weaklings and blows out weak fires. On the side of strength, he speaks of strong homes with firmly jointed doors, firm bodies and steadfast hearts, and of strong fires that roar and flourish when the wind blows. This deliberate contrast shows two possible outcomes when difficulties strike: the weak are destroyed, while the strong are made even stronger. By placing the two side by side, the poet persuades the reader to choose the path of strength. The message is clear and inspiring — we cannot stop the storms of life, but we can decide whether they break us or build us. If we prepare ourselves with physical and mental strength, the very forces that destroy others will become our friends and help us flourish. Thus, the contrast between the weak and the strong is the poet's most powerful tool for delivering his lesson of courage, resilience and self-confidence.

The word 'crumbling' suggests that all these things — houses, doors, rafters, wood, bodies, lives and hearts — are weak, fragile and falling apart. It is repeated to emphasise how easily everything that is feeble collapses before the powerful wind and to stress the theme of the weak being destroyed.
