About the author: Mahadevi Verma (1907-1987) was one of the four great pillars of the Chhayavad movement in Hindi poetry, alongside Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', Jaishankar Prasad and Sumitranandan Pant. She was a poet, essayist, sketch-writer and educationist, deeply sensitive to suffering, especially that of women, the poor and animals. Her famous works include 'Yama', 'Neerja', 'Deepshikha' (poetry) and 'Mera Parivar', 'Smriti Ki Rekhayein' and 'Path Ke Saathi' (prose/sketches). 'Neelkanth' is taken from her animal-sketch collection 'Mera Parivar', in which she lovingly portrays the birds and animals she reared. She was honoured with the Jnanpith Award.
📖 Detailed Explanation
The author once goes to the bird market in Nakhasa with her servant Hari and a child Sona. There she sees a man carrying a big cage full of birds. From him she buys two young peacock chicks for thirty-five rupees, even though the seller cunningly raises the price by calling them 'morni-mor' (peahen and peacock). The two little birds are weak and frightened, and the author brings them home and lovingly nurses them back to health.

As the peacock grows, his beauty becomes extraordinary. His neck takes on a deep blue colour, so the author names him 'Neelkanth' and the peahen 'Radha'. Neelkanth becomes the leader and protector of all the creatures in the author's little 'zoo'. He keeps a watch over everyone, and when a snake once enters the cage, Neelkanth bravely cuts it into two pieces with his sharp beak and claws, saving a young rabbit. This shows his courage and his sense of responsibility towards the weak.

Neelkanth is graceful, playful and deeply attached to Radha. In the rainy season he spreads his shimmering feathers and dances with such beauty that it seems the colours of the rainbow have come alive. Radha and Neelkanth live like an affectionate pair, playing hide-and-seek and feeding together. The author describes how Neelkanth would sometimes shelter the smaller creatures under his wings, behaving almost like a kind guardian.

Tragedy strikes when Radha dies. To fill the emptiness, the author brings another peahen named Kubja. But Kubja is jealous and ill-tempered — she does not let Neelkanth live in peace, attacks the other birds, and even pecks at the eggs. Neelkanth grows sad and lonely. One day, while sitting on a high branch, he slips, gets entangled and dies. The author is heartbroken. She wraps him in a piece of her Banarasi saree and buries him under the Sangam (confluence) near the river, planting it as a grave so beautiful that even strangers ask about the bird who lies there.

The title 'Neelkanth' is perfectly apt as the entire sketch revolves around the peacock named Neelkanth — a name the author gives because of his deep blue (neel) neck (kanth). His beauty, courage, affection, dance and tragic death form the heart of the lesson, so naming the piece after him is fully justified.

Neelkanth is the central figure of Mahadevi Verma's sketch. He is extraordinarily beautiful, with a deep blue neck and brilliantly coloured feathers that shimmer when he spreads them in his famous rainbow-like dance in the rains. But he is far more than a pretty bird. He is brave and protective — he kills a snake with his beak and claws to save a young rabbit, and he acts as the watchful leader and guardian of every creature in the author's little zoo, even sheltering the smaller animals. He is also deeply loving, sharing a tender bond with Radha, playing and feeding with her. After Radha's death and the arrival of the jealous Kubja, he becomes lonely and sad, and finally meets a tragic end. His beauty, courage, affection, dignity and capacity to feel sorrow make him a fully developed, sympathetic character — truly the hero of the sketch, around whom the entire narrative revolves.

Through the loving portrait of Neelkanth, the lesson teaches us that animals and birds are not mere creatures but beings with rich emotions — they feel love, joy, loyalty, jealousy, loneliness and grief, just as humans do. The author's motherly care for her birds and her deep sorrow at their deaths show that a warm, affectionate bond can grow between humans and animals. Neelkanth's bravery in protecting the weak and his devotion to Radha reveal noble qualities we usually attribute only to people. The contrast between gentle Radha and spiteful Kubja reminds us that jealousy and cruelty bring sorrow, while love and care bring beauty and harmony. The lesson ultimately urges us to be sensitive, kind and respectful towards all living beings, for in cherishing them we enrich our own lives.
