Vasant Poem

Overview

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

On his head there was no turban, nor any proper garment on his body; O Lord, who could tell in which village such a man might live! He wore a torn dhoti and a tattered, dirty shawl, and there were no shoes to cover his feet. A weak, frail Brahmin stood at the door, gazing in wonder at the beautiful palace and its grounds. He was asking for the home of the Lord, the kind protector of the poor, and gave his own name as Sudama.

Seeing such a wretched, cracked condition of his feet, with thorns still stuck in them, Krishna said: 'Alas! My friend, you have suffered great hardship; you came to me only now — where have you wasted all these days?' Beholding the miserable plight of Sudama, the ocean of compassion (Krishna) was moved and wept. He did not even touch the water in the basin with his hands — he washed his friend's feet with the tears of his own eyes.

Krishna teasingly says: 'Sister-in-law (your wife) must have sent something for me — why do you not give it to me? You are quite an expert in the art of stealing! What does it matter that you have now become poor?' Recalling the old childhood incident, Krishna reminds Sudama and says — here you are eating only what is your own share (referring to the gram/chana stolen long ago).

Returning home, Sudama is bewildered: there stands the same kind of royal splendour — many elephants and horses fill his mind with confusion. He wonders whether he has lost his way and reached someone else's place of wealth by mistake. Then his two beautiful family members (his wife, and his joy) come running to the door, embrace him to their hearts, and feel happy. Standing at the door he asks himself — why should anyone enquire about us? Did all that I brought (and gave to Krishna) go in vain?

📝 Summary

The poem 'Sudama Charit' by Narottamdas retells the moving story of the friendship between Lord Krishna and the poor Brahmin Sudama, who were childhood friends and studied together at the ashram of guru Sandipani. Years later, Sudama, crushed by poverty, is persuaded by his wife to go to his old friend Krishna, now the wealthy king of Dwarka, to ask for help. He carries a small bundle of beaten rice (poha) as a humble gift. When the ragged, barefoot Sudama reaches the palace, Krishna welcomes him with overflowing love — he seats his friend on his own bed, weeps at his pitiful condition, and washes his cracked feet with his tears. The two recall their childhood days, including a playful incident about stealing and eating gram. Out of shyness and poverty, Sudama hesitates to give the humble poha, but Krishna lovingly takes it. Sudama returns home without asking for anything, and on the way he is full of doubt and despair about his unchanged fate. But on reaching his village he is astonished to find his hut transformed into a magnificent palace — Krishna, in his silent generosity, has already filled his life with riches. The poem celebrates true friendship, humility, devotion and the boundless compassion of Krishna.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poem teaches that one should value friendship and human relationships more than wealth, and that the truly great are those who remain humble and generous towards the less fortunate. It also conveys that selfless help, given quietly without expecting thanks, is the highest form of love and devotion.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Sudama Charit' means 'the character / story of Sudama'. The whole poem revolves around Sudama — his poverty, his journey to Dwarka, his meeting with his friend Krishna, his hesitation, and the miraculous change in his fortune. Since the events, emotions and the moral all centre on the life and experience of Sudama, the title is perfectly appropriate.

So great was his love that he washed Sudama's feet with the tears of his own eyes instead of ordinary water. He talked sweetly of their childhood days and even teased him about the old gram-stealing incident. This warm, tearful welcome shows that their friendship was pure, true and untouched by differences of wealth and status.

Q. What is the central message of 'Sudama Charit'? How does the poet convey it?

The central message of 'Sudama Charit' is that true friendship and human values are far greater than wealth and status, and that real greatness lies in humility and selfless generosity. Narottamdas conveys this through the contrast between the rich king Krishna and the destitute Brahmin Sudama. Despite his royal splendour, Krishna treats his poor friend with boundless love, weeps at his suffering and quietly transforms his life with riches — without Sudama even asking. Sudama, on the other hand, is too modest to ask for help and hesitates even to offer his humble gift of beaten rice. Through their meeting, the poet shows that the worthy person gives without expecting return, and that devotion and friendship melt all barriers. The tender emotions, the pathos of Sudama's poverty and the silent miracle of Krishna's kindness together drive home the lesson that love, loyalty and compassion are life's true treasures.
