About the author: Amitav Ghosh, an acclaimed Indian author, uses his storytelling to shed light on social issues, particularly focusing on the lives of marginalized children in India.
📖 Detailed Explanation
The lesson is divided into two parts. The first, 'Sometimes I Find a Rupee in the Garbage', is about Saheb-e-Alam, a young ragpicker from Seemapuri, a slum on the periphery of Delhi. The author meets Saheb scrounging for 'gold' in garbage heaps. His family, like thousands of others, fled the green fields of Dhaka in Bangladesh after their homes and fields were destroyed by storms, and came to India looking for a living. They have lived in Seemapuri for more than thirty years without an identity, without permits, but with ration cards that get them grain and a vote.

Ragpicking has become a fine art for these people. For the elders, garbage means a means of survival; but for the children it is wrapped in wonder, sometimes yielding a rupee, even a ten-rupee note, or other treasures. Saheb dreams of going to school. The author half-jokingly promises to start a school, and feels ashamed when, days later, he asks if her school is ready, for she had made a promise that was not meant seriously. Saheb is barefoot, like most ragpicker children; the author reflects that going barefoot is not a tradition or choice but a sign of perpetual poverty, an excuse to explain away a state of being.

Later, the author sees Saheb working at a tea stall near the Sweets Corner, earning 800 rupees and all his meals. Yet he looks less free and less happy. The steel canister he now carries is heavier than the light bag of his ragpicking days, for the bag was his own, while the canister belongs to the owner of the tea shop. He has lost the carefree spirit of childhood; he is no longer his own master. The very freedom of being a poor but independent ragpicker has been replaced by the bondage of being someone's employee.

The second part, 'I Want to Drive a Car', is set in Firozabad, the centre of India's glass-blowing industry, where families have spent generations making bangles. The author meets Mukesh, a young boy who, unlike others, dares to dream of becoming a motor mechanic and driving a car. Around 20,000 children work in the glass furnaces of Firozabad, in dingy cells without air and light, often losing the brightness of their eyes before they become adults, slogging in dark hutments next to lines of flames of flickering oil lamps.

Mukesh's grandmother believes the bangle-making is their destiny, the karam (fate) of their caste, the lineage of the gods who gave the Saheb (Lord) of all. Mukesh's family lives in stinking lanes choked with garbage; their house, with crumbling walls and wobbly doors, is being rebuilt by his elder brother. His sister-in-law veils her face before the elders, observing the tradition of the family. Mukesh's father, a poor bangle maker, has not managed to renovate the house or send his sons to school; he has only taught them the art of making bangles.

The author describes the vicious circle that traps the bangle makers. Despite years of mind-numbing toil, they have not enough to eat. They are caught in a web of poverty, burdened by the stigma of caste in which they are born. Two distinct worlds keep them imprisoned: one of the family, weighed down by tradition and the belief that they are born to the caste of bangle makers; and the other a vicious circle of the sahukars (moneylenders), the middlemen, the policemen, the keepers of law, the bureaucrats and the politicians. Together they impose a baggage on the child that he cannot put down. Generations of poverty and apathy have killed the ability to dream.

Yet Mukesh is different. He insists on becoming his own master—a motor mechanic. He will walk to a garage and learn, even though it is far away. When asked if he dreams of flying a plane, he is content to dream of cars, for to do so much is already to dare more than his community ever has. In Mukesh's quiet determination, the author finds a faint ray of hope amid the otherwise crushing darkness of Firozabad—a child who refuses to accept that his life is fixed by his birth.

📝 Summary
'Lost Spring' by Anees Jung presents two poignant stories of children robbed of their childhood by poverty and exploitation. The first concerns Saheb-e-Alam, a barefoot ragpicker in the Seemapuri slum of Delhi whose family migrated from Bangladesh. He scrounges garbage for survival and dreams of school, but when he finally gets a paid job at a tea stall, he loses his freedom and carefree spirit. The second story is of Mukesh in Firozabad, where 20,000 children work in dangerous glass furnaces, losing their eyesight and health while making bangles. Trapped by caste, tradition and a vicious circle of moneylenders, middlemen, police and politicians, the families cannot dream of any other life. Mukesh alone dares to dream differently—he wants to be a motor mechanic and drive a car. Through these real lives, Anees Jung exposes the cruelty of child labour and the systems that steal the 'spring' (childhood) of India's poor children.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of 'Lost Spring' is the analysis of the grinding poverty and the social, economic, political and traditional forces that condemn millions of Indian children to a life of exploitation, denying them education and stealing their childhood. Through Saheb and Mukesh, Anees Jung shows how poverty and apathy crush dreams, yet she leaves a faint hope in Mukesh's determination to break free.

🎯 Themes
Child Labour and Exploitation: The story exposes how millions of poor children, like Saheb and the 20,000 children of Firozabad, are forced into hazardous work instead of attending school, robbed of health, education and joy.

Grinding Poverty: Poverty is the root cause that forces families to migrate, to send children to work, and to live without identity, clean homes or hope. Barefoot children and stinking lanes are images of perpetual want.

The Trap of Tradition and Caste: The bangle makers believe their craft is their God-given destiny (karam), and a vicious circle of moneylenders, middlemen, police and politicians keeps them imprisoned, killing their ability to dream.

Lost Childhood versus the Power to Dream: Childhood (the 'spring') is stolen from these children; yet Mukesh's resolve to become a motor mechanic shows that the courage to dream can still survive and offers hope of breaking the cycle.

🧭 Message & Title
The message of 'Lost Spring' is that child labour is a cruel social evil rooted in poverty, caste, tradition and the indifference of those in power. Every child deserves education, freedom and a real childhood. Society and the state must break the vicious circles of exploitation, and individuals must dare, like Mukesh, to dream beyond the destiny imposed on them by birth.

The title 'Lost Spring' is highly apt and symbolic. 'Spring' represents the season of blossoming, joy and growth—a metaphor for childhood, which should be the most carefree and hopeful phase of life. 'Lost' shows how poverty, exploitation and oppressive traditions snatch this spring away from children like Saheb and Mukesh, leaving them with toil instead of play and broken dreams instead of hope. The full book title, 'Lost Spring: Stories of Stolen Childhood', makes this meaning explicit. The title thus captures the entire tragedy of the lesson in two words.

Saheb-e-Alam, a ragpicker in Seemapuri, and Mukesh, a bangle maker's son in Firozabad, both live in grinding poverty that denies them education and a real childhood. However, their attitudes differ sharply. Saheb is gentle, hopeful and dreams of school, but he drifts with circumstances; when he takes a job at a tea stall he gains money but loses his freedom and the carefree spirit of childhood, becoming bound to a master. Mukesh, on the other hand, actively refuses to accept bangle-making as his God-given destiny. He dares to dream of becoming a motor mechanic and is willing to walk far to a garage to learn. Through this contrast, Anees Jung shows that poverty and tradition crush most children into resigned acceptance, but the human will to dream can still survive. Saheb represents the countless children whose spring is stolen, while Mukesh represents the faint but real hope that determination can break the vicious circle of caste and poverty. The author thus combines a powerful indictment of child labour with a quiet message of hope and the need to nurture every child's right to dream.

The bangle makers of Firozabad live in extreme misery. About 20,000 children work in dingy, airless and lightless cells of glass furnaces, often losing the brightness of their eyes before adulthood, slogging beside flickering oil lamps. They live in stinking lanes choked with garbage, in houses with crumbling walls and wobbly doors. Despite generations of mind-numbing toil, they do not have enough to eat. They are imprisoned by two worlds: the family's tradition and the belief that bangle-making is their God-given caste destiny, and the vicious circle of sahukars, middlemen, policemen, bureaucrats and politicians who exploit them. If they try to organise into a cooperative, they are beaten and dragged to jail. Burdened by the stigma of caste and generations of poverty and apathy, they have lost even the ability to dream of a better life. Anees Jung thus paints a heartbreaking picture of a community crushed by both tradition and a corrupt, exploitative system.

It means 'lord of the universe'. It is deeply ironic because Saheb is actually a poor, barefoot ragpicker who has no power or possessions, the very opposite of a lord of the universe.

Like morning birds, the barefoot boys appear in the streets early in the morning to pick rags and disappear by noon, suggesting their restless, free-roaming, yet rootless and uncertain existence.

Being barefoot is not their choice or tradition but a sign of their perpetual poverty—they cannot even afford shoes, which reflects their deprived and marginalised condition.
