साखी

Sparsh Poem

Overview

About the author: Kabir (c. 1398–1518) was a great saint-poet of the Bhakti movement (Nirgun branch). According to popular belief he was born in Kashi (Varanasi) and was brought up by a Muslim weaver couple, Neeru and Neema. He earned his living by weaving cloth and is said to have been a disciple of Saint Ramananda. Kabir was unlettered—he himself said, 'मसि कागद छुओ नहीं' (I never touched ink and paper)—yet his utterances were collected by his disciples in works such as the 'Bijak', containing 'Sakhi', 'Sabad' and 'Ramaini'. He fiercely opposed empty rituals, idol worship, the caste system, and the hypocrisy of both Hindu and Muslim orthodoxy. He worshipped a formless (nirgun), all-pervading God and stressed inner purity, true love, knowledge and the guru's grace. His language is 'Sadhukkadi', a mixed folk dialect, and his couplets are famous for their sharp, plain-spoken wisdom.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

Speak such words after shedding the ego (pride) of the mind. Words spoken thus give coolness (peace) to others and make oneself cool (peaceful) too.

The musk lies in the deer's own navel, yet the deer wanders searching for it in the forest. In the same way God dwells in every heart, but the world does not see this.

When 'I' (ego) was present, God was not there; now God is present and 'I' (ego) is gone. All the darkness (of ignorance) vanished the moment I saw the lamp (of knowledge) within.

The whole world is 'happy', eating and sleeping (lost in worldly pleasures, unaware of reality). Only the servant Kabir is 'unhappy'—he stays awake and weeps (anguished by the world's ignorance and his longing for God).

The serpent of separation (from God) dwells in the body, and no spell can cure its bite. One separated from Ram (God) does not survive; and if he survives, he goes mad (with the pain of separation).

Keep your critic (one who points out your faults) close to you—build him a hut right in your courtyard. For without soap and without water he cleanses your nature (purifies your character).

Reading book after book the whole world died, yet no one became truly wise (a real pandit). One who reads (learns) the two-and-a-half letters of 'love' (प्रेम) alone becomes truly wise.

I have burnt down my own house (of worldly attachments and ego), taking the flaming torch in my hand. Now I will burn the house of only that person who is willing to walk along with me (on the path of knowledge and devotion).

📝 Summary

'Sakhi' is a selection of eight couplets (dohas) by Sant Kabir that pack profound spiritual and moral teaching into simple words. Kabir advises us to speak sweet, ego-free words that bring peace to others and to ourselves. Like the deer that hunts in the forest for the musk hidden in its own navel, human beings search for God outside while He dwells within every heart; God is realised only when the ego dissolves and the lamp of knowledge dispels the darkness of ignorance. While the worldly people remain 'happy', engrossed in eating and sleeping, the true seeker like Kabir stays awake and weeps in the pain of separation from God—a separation so intense that no spell can cure it and the lover either dies or goes mad. Kabir tells us to keep our critics close, for they purify our character without soap or water. Finally, he declares that mere book-learning makes no one wise; only the one who reads the 'two-and-a-half letters of love' becomes a true pandit. Kabir himself has burnt the house of worldly attachment and offers to lead only those ready to walk the path of selfless devotion with him.

💡 Central Idea

Through these couplets Kabir conveys that true religion lies not in outward rituals or bookish knowledge but in inner purity, humility, sweet speech, the surrender of ego, and selfless love. God resides within every heart and is realised through devotion, self-knowledge and the death of the 'I'.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

We should speak sweetly and humbly, give up pride, look for God within ourselves, value loving devotion and self-knowledge above empty bookish learning, and welcome honest criticism that helps us better ourselves.

Justification of the Title

'Sakhi' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Sakshi' meaning 'witness' (eyewitness). These couplets bear witness to spiritual truth and convey, in a concise, memorable doha form, the essence of Kabir's experience and teaching. As each saakhi testifies to a moral or spiritual truth that guides the seeker, the title is fully appropriate.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Kabir condemns bookish knowledge and exalts love and humility. Discuss with reference to the couplets prescribed in 'Sakhi'.

Kabir was a saint-poet who valued lived experience and inner realisation over scholarship. In 'पोथी पढ़ि पढ़ि जग मुआ' he declares that people spend their whole lives reading books yet remain unwise, because true wisdom does not come from scriptures but from the 'two-and-a-half letters of love'. For him, the highest knowledge is selfless love and devotion to God. He couples this with deep humility: in 'निंदक नेड़ा राखिए' he urges us to keep our critic close, since the critic—without soap or water—cleanses our character by pointing out our faults. Similarly, in 'जब मैं था तब हरि नहीं' he teaches that as long as the ego ('मैं') survives, God cannot be found; humility and the death of the ego bring divine light that destroys ignorance. Even his advice on sweet, ego-free speech ('ऐसी बानी बोलिए') reflects the same humility. Thus Kabir consistently places love, humility and self-knowledge far above empty bookish learning, teaching that the path to God runs through a pure, loving and egoless heart rather than through scholarship.

Q. How does Kabir present the idea that God resides within and that ego is the barrier to realising Him? Explain with reference to the couplets.

Two couplets capture this idea powerfully. Kabir uses the famous example of the musk-deer: the musk lies in the deer's own navel, yet it wanders the forest in search of the fragrance. In the same way, God dwells in every heart ('घटि घटि राँम है'), but the deluded world searches for Him in temples, forests and rituals and never finds Him. The reason for this failure is revealed in 'जब मैं था तब हरि नहीं': as long as the ego ('मैं') was present, God was absent; the moment the ego dissolved, God was realised. Kabir compares self-knowledge to a lamp—'जब दीपक देख्या माँहि'—whose light instantly destroys the darkness of ignorance. Together these couplets teach that the divine is not external but innate, and that the sole obstacle to His realisation is the human ego. Only when one looks inward with humility and lets the 'I' die does the inner light of God shine forth.

Q. What are the 'two-and-a-half letters' (ढाई आखर) and why are they important?

Q. Name and explain one literary device used in this couplet.

'Anupras' (alliteration) is used in 'पोथी पढ़ि पढ़ि', where the consonant 'प' is repeated, creating a pleasing rhythm. 'ढाई आखर प्रेम का' is also a metaphor (रूपक) for love.
