📖 Detailed Explanation
The narrator, Vikram Seth, arrives in Kathmandu after his long and difficult journey through Tibet. After all the hardship, the comforts of the city feel luxurious to him. He visits two of the most important temples of Kathmandu — the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, sacred to Lord Shiva, and the Buddhist shrine of Baudhnath. He notes that he is leaving for home, so he feels relaxed yet observant, soaking in the atmosphere of the city before his departure.

At the Pashupatinath temple there is an atmosphere of 'febrile confusion' — wild, restless activity. Only Hindus are allowed inside, so when a 'fierce-looking' policeman stops some foreigners, a westerner with a card declaring himself a Hindu argues with the policeman to be allowed in. Priests, hawkers, devotees, tourists, cows, monkeys, pigeons and dogs all roam through the grounds. There is a great crush of people trying to enter the temple. A party of saffron-clad Westerners struggle for permission to enter. Princess Basundhara, a relative of the King of Nepal, is allowed to move ahead through the crowd while others wait.

By the Bagmati river that flows beside the temple, a number of scenes unfold. A washerwoman washes clothes; a small shrine half-emerges from the stones along the riverbank. It is said that when the shrine emerges fully, the goddess inside will escape, and the evil period of the Kaliyug (the age of decadence) will end. A corpse is being cremated on the banks. Monkeys fight near the temple. A small Hindu temple stands across the river with stone steps leading down to the water. All this creates a picture of life and death existing side by side.

In complete contrast to the chaos of Pashupatinath, the Baudhnath stupa, the Buddhist shrine, has an atmosphere of stillness and quiet. Its immense white dome is ringed by a road. Small shops stand on its outer edge, many owned by Tibetan immigrants. There are no crowds; the author calls it 'a haven of quietness in the busy streets around'. This calm contrast shows the two different moods that the same city can hold.

The author then walks through the busy streets of Kathmandu near the hotel and Durbar Square. He describes the marketplace vividly — flute-sellers, fruit-sellers, vegetable and antique shops, postcard and Western cosmetics vendors, film-rolls, chocolate, and copper utensils. Film songs blare from radios, car horns honk, sounds of bicycle bells and a cow lowing all fill the air. He buys marzipan, roasted corn, a Coca-Cola, and a comic book. He stops to read his accumulated mail at a small post office. The street is alive with colour, sound and smell.

The author admits he is too lazy to plan a trip out of the Kathmandu valley. He thinks of two ways to return to Delhi — a long, adventurous overland route by bus and train through the Nepal-India border, or a direct one-and-a-half-hour flight. He chooses the easy option of flying, gently mocking his own laziness and love of comfort.

The most memorable part of the chapter is the author's reflection on a flute-seller. As he walks back, he hears and watches a flute-seller standing quietly in the square. He has a pole with fifty or sixty bansuris (flutes) sticking out in all directions, like the quills of a porcupine. From time to time he plays a flute softly, almost lazily and unhurriedly, without trying to call attention to himself or sell more flutes. The author is deeply moved by this music. He reflects that the flute is found in almost every culture of the world — the reed-neh of West Asia, the recorder of Western music, the Japanese shakuhachi, the deep bansuri of Hindustani classical music, and the clear or breathy flutes of South America. To him, the sound of the flute is the most human and universal of all sounds, touching something deep in the human heart and reminding everyone of their shared humanity.

📝 Summary
In 'Kathmandu', Vikram Seth describes his visit to the capital city of Nepal while on his way back home to India after travelling through Tibet. He first visits two famous shrines — the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath and the Buddhist stupa of Baudhnath. Pashupatinath is full of 'febrile confusion', crowded with priests, hawkers, devotees, tourists, animals and a struggling crowd trying to enter, with a corpse being cremated on the banks of the holy Bagmati river. In sharp contrast, Baudhnath is a peaceful haven of quietness, its white dome surrounded by Tibetan shops. The author then strolls through the lively, colourful, noisy bazaars of Kathmandu, full of vendors selling flutes, fruit, cosmetics, copper utensils and films, with film songs, horns and bells all around. He buys some snacks and a comic book and reads his mail. Feeling lazy, he decides to fly back to Delhi rather than take the long overland route. Finally, he is captivated by a flute-seller who plays his bansuri softly and unhurriedly. This music moves him deeply, leading him to reflect that the flute exists in every culture and that its sound is the most human and universal of all, connecting all of humanity.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of 'Kathmandu' is to present a vivid, sensory travel picture of a city where the sacred and the everyday, chaos and calm, life and death exist side by side. Through the description of two contrasting shrines and a busy marketplace — and especially through the lone flute-seller — the author shows that beneath all cultural differences, music, and particularly the flute, is a universal language that unites all of humanity.

🧭 Message & Title
The chapter conveys that the true spirit of a place lies not only in its grand monuments but in the rich, lively, everyday life of its streets. Above all, it carries the message that despite differences of religion, region and culture, music is a universal human language — the simple, unhurried note of a flute can touch and unite all human hearts.

The title 'Kathmandu' is appropriate because the entire piece is set in this capital city of Nepal and is a travel-writing portrait of it. Every scene — the temples of Pashupatinath and Baudhnath, the Bagmati river, the crowded bazaars, and the flute-seller in the square — is part of the life of Kathmandu. The title at once names the place and promises the reader a vivid tour of its sights, sounds and spirit, which the chapter fully delivers.

👤 Character Sketches
Vikram Seth is the author and narrator who experiences Kathmandu through his own eyes. He is observant and sensitive, noticing the smallest details of temples, streets and people. He is honest and humorous about himself, openly admitting his laziness and love of comfort when he chooses to fly home rather than travel overland. Most of all, he is reflective and deeply moved by simple beauty, as seen in his thoughtful response to the flute-seller's music.

There are no crowds and no noise; the author calls it 'a haven of quietness in the busy streets around'. What makes him special is his manner: unlike the noisy hawkers around him, he plays a flute now and then in an unhurried, almost lazy way, not to attract buyers but as if for his own pleasure. His soft, gentle music stands out from the din of the bazaar and deeply moves the author. It leads Vikram Seth to a thoughtful reflection on the flute itself. To him, the sound of the flute is the most human and universal of all sounds. Because it is played with the breath and so close to the human voice, it speaks directly to the heart and makes one feel the shared humanity that lies beneath all cultural differences. Thus a simple street musician becomes, for the author, a symbol of the power of music to unite all people.
