Long, long ago dogs were not the tame, faithful animals we see today. They were wild and lived in the forest in packs, just like wolves. One particular dog grew tired of this wild life. He was tired of constantly running about, hunting for his own food and living in fear and danger. He decided that it would be far better and safer to serve a strong master who could protect him. He made up his mind to go out into the world and find the strongest creature of all, so that he could live in peace and security.

First the dog joined a big wolf and made him his master, because the wolf seemed brave and strong. They lived together for some days. But one night, while the wolf was leading the dog through the forest, he suddenly stopped, trembling with fear, and said that they must hide because a bear was coming and the bear might kill them both. The dog was surprised. He thought to himself that if the wolf was so afraid of the bear, then the bear must be stronger than the wolf. So the dog decided to leave the weak wolf and serve the mighty bear instead.

The dog went to the bear and offered to serve him. The bear agreed. For a while the dog was happy, believing he had at last found the strongest of all masters. But one day, as the bear was walking about hunting for cattle to eat, he too suddenly grew frightened. He told the dog that a lion was near, and that they must run away quickly or the lion would tear them to pieces. Once again the dog understood that his master was not the strongest. If the bear was afraid of the lion, then surely the lion was the most powerful animal. So the dog left the bear and went off to find the lion.

The lion accepted the dog as his servant, and the dog was now sure that no creature on earth could be stronger than the lion. He served the lion faithfully and lived without fear for many days. Then one morning, as the lion was roaming near the edge of the forest, he too became uneasy. He told the dog that a man was coming along the road, and that they must keep out of his way, for man was dangerous. The dog could hardly believe his ears. If the great lion, the king of beasts, was afraid of man, then man must be the strongest of all living creatures.

The dog never again wished to change his master, because he had finally found the strongest of all. And that, the story tells us, is the reason why even today the dog is the faithful friend and companion of human beings, living happily in their homes.
