✍️ About the Author / Poet

‘The Tsunami’ is a collection of true survival accounts compiled from news reports and eyewitness testimonies after the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004. The first part is set in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India and records the experiences of ordinary people — Ignesious, Sanjeev, Meghna and the little girl Almas. The second part tells of Tilly Smith, a ten-year-old English schoolgirl whose geography lesson helped save a beach full of tourists in Thailand. The chapter is not the work of a single named author; it is journalistic, fact-based writing meant to show how a few people survived nature’s fury through luck, presence of mind and knowledge.

📖 Detailed Explanation

The chapter opens in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the morning of 26 December 2004. A powerful undersea earthquake near Sumatra in Indonesia set off giant waves — a tsunami — that raced across the Indian Ocean and struck the coasts of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and many other countries, killing about a hundred and fifty thousand people in a single day.

We first meet Ignesious, the manager of a cooperative society in Katchall, one of the Nicobar Islands. He felt the earthquake and rushed his family out of the house. His wife noticed the seawater receding (drawing back) — a warning sign — and shouted to warn the others. Ignesious survived, but in the chaos he lost his wife, his two younger children, his father-in-law and his brother-in-law to the rushing waves.

Next is the moving story of Sanjeev, a policeman posted in the Katchall island, and his wife Meghna. As the waves struck, Sanjeev placed Meghna on a floating refrigerator to save her, but he himself was swept away. Meghna floated on the water for two days, clinging to a wooden log and a plank, surrounded by dead bodies, before the waves finally washed her back to the shore alive.

Then comes the remarkable account of Almas Javed, a young girl whose parents owned the only petrol pump in the Nicobar Islands. Her family lived near the Air Force base. When the earthquake struck, Almas’s father — remembering an old grandmother’s story — realised the danger as he saw the water rising. The family tried to escape, but Almas lost both her parents and her brother. She herself was knocked unconscious, and when she awoke she found herself washed up among bushes, having survived alone.

The second part of the chapter shifts to Thailand and tells of Tilly Smith, a ten-year-old English girl on holiday at Maikhao beach with her family. Two weeks earlier, in her geography class in England, her teacher Mr Andrew Kearney had taught her about tsunamis. On the beach, Tilly noticed the sea bubbling and frothing and the water suddenly drawing back — exactly the warning signs she had learned. She warned her parents, who alerted others, and the beach was cleared in time. Thanks to Tilly’s knowledge and courage, Maikhao was one of the few beaches where no one was killed or seriously injured.

Finally, the chapter notes a strange and striking fact: very few wild animals and birds died in the tsunami. At Yala National Park in Sri Lanka, elephants, leopards, deer and other creatures had already fled to higher ground before the waves came. Many believe animals possess a ‘sixth sense’ — they could feel the vibrations of the earth and the approaching danger long before humans realised anything was wrong, and so they escaped.

Justification of the Title

The title ‘The Tsunami’ is apt because the entire chapter revolves around the catastrophic Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 — its sudden onset, its terrible destruction, and the human and animal responses to it. Every story in the lesson is shaped by this single event, so the title directly names the force that drives the whole narrative.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Describe how knowledge and presence of mind helped save lives during the 2004 tsunami, with examples from the chapter.

The chapter shows again and again that those who recognised the warning signs or kept their wits survived. Tilly Smith, a ten-year-old English girl, had studied tsunamis in geography only two weeks earlier; when she saw the sea bubbling, frothing and suddenly receding at Maikhao beach, she recognised the danger and warned her parents, who got the beach cleared in time, so no one there was killed. Similarly, Almas’s father recalled an old grandmother’s story about the sea and understood the danger when the water rose. Ignesious’s wife noticed the sea receding and shouted a warning that helped some flee. Even the animals, guided by instinct, escaped to higher ground. Together these examples prove the chapter’s key message: awareness of nature’s warning signs and quick, calm thinking can make the difference between life and death.

Q. ‘The Tsunami’ contains both tragedy and hope. Discuss with reference to the human stories in the chapter.

The chapter is full of tragedy: Ignesious loses his wife, two children, father-in-law and brother-in-law; Almas loses her parents and brother and is left utterly alone; Sanjeev sacrifices his own life while saving his wife. Such losses show the cruel, destructive power of nature. Yet the chapter also shines with hope and human strength. Meghna survives two terrifying days afloat through sheer endurance and is washed back alive; little Almas, though orphaned, survives against all odds; and Tilly Smith’s courage and knowledge save an entire beach. Sanjeev’s sacrifice itself is an act of love. Thus the chapter balances heartbreak with the resilience, courage and love that help people survive and carry on, showing that even in the darkest disaster the human spirit endures.
