📖 Detailed Explanation
The writer (a South Indian traveller) describes his journey to Taxila, an ancient site of Buddhist civilisation in Pakistan. He had a great fascination for history and was wandering through the ruins of Taxila. It was a very hot day. After moving about in the scorching sun, he became thirsty and went into the city in search of a hotel where he could eat and rest. The streets of the old city were narrow and crowded.

He found a small hotel in a narrow lane and entered it. The owner of the hotel was a Pathan named Hamid Khan. The writer ordered chapatis and curry. Hamid Khan himself prepared fresh, hot chapatis for him and served them with great affection. While the writer was eating, the two began to talk. Hamid Khan asked him where he had come from. When he learnt that the writer had come from India (Hindustan), he was overjoyed.

Hamid Khan told the writer that India was his motherland too. He said that his ancestors had lived there and he had a great longing to see Hindustan. He spoke of Indian places, of the Taj Mahal and other sights, and expressed his deep love for the land. The writer was a Hindu from India, and Hamid Khan was a Muslim from Pakistan, yet between them there grew an instant warmth and friendliness, as if they were old friends. They forgot the differences of religion and country.

When the writer finished his meal and got up to pay the bill, Hamid Khan refused to take any money. He folded his hands and said with great feeling that the writer was a guest from Hindustan, his motherland, and to take money from such a guest would be a disgrace. He told the writer that whenever any countryman of his — anyone from India — happened to visit Taxila, he should be sent to Hamid Khan's hotel as a guest. The writer was deeply moved by this love and hospitality.

Some years later, when the partition of India took place and dreadful communal riots broke out, the writer remembered Hamid Khan with a heavy heart. He wondered with anxiety what might have happened to that loving, simple Pathan. Taxila had become a centre of terrible Hindu–Muslim violence. The writer's mind was filled with fear and sorrow for the fate of his kind friend Hamid Khan. The story ends on this note of painful uncertainty, leaving the reader to feel the cruelty of communal hatred that destroys such pure human bonds.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the lesson is that true human love, hospitality and brotherhood rise far above the artificial barriers of religion, caste and nationality. Hamid Khan's selfless affection for an Indian stranger shows that the human heart recognises no borders, while the partition riots reveal how communal hatred mercilessly destroys these beautiful bonds.

The title 'Hamid Khan' is perfectly apt because the entire travel sketch revolves around the character of Hamid Khan, the loving Pathan hotel-owner of Taxila. It is through his warmth, his love for his motherland India, his selfless hospitality and the writer's later anxiety about his fate during the riots that the central theme of humanity above religion is conveyed. Hamid Khan is the heart and soul of the narrative; hence naming the lesson after him is fully justified.

The lesson beautifully establishes that humanity rises above all barriers of religion and country. The writer is a Hindu from India, while Hamid Khan is a Muslim from Pakistan, yet the moment they meet, a warm bond of love grows between them. Hamid Khan serves the writer fresh chapatis with affection and, on learning that he is from India, treats him as a cherished guest from his own motherland. He refuses to accept any money, considering it a disgrace to charge a guest from the land he loves, and asks that all Indian visitors be sent to him. This selfless love crosses every line of faith and nationhood. The painful contrast comes at the end, when partition unleashes communal riots and the writer fears for Hamid Khan's life. The lesson thus shows that ordinary human hearts naturally overflow with love and brotherhood, and that it is only hatred and division that destroy these bonds. Humanity, the lesson teaches, is the greatest religion of all.
