He achieved what no one had achieved before - he discovered a way to make the human body transparent and so render himself completely invisible. However, his intellect was not matched by any sense of morality, self-control or social responsibility, and this made him dangerous rather than great. Throughout the story Griffin behaves in a lawless, criminal manner. When his landlord tried to evict him, instead of leaving peacefully, he took revenge by setting the house on fire. To survive as an invisible man he stole warm clothing from a London store, then robbed a theatrical shop and attacked its owner from behind to steal his money. At Iping he was involved in the burglary at the clergyman's house, terrorised Mrs Hall, and finally knocked the constable Jaffers unconscious to escape. He felt no guilt and showed no concern for the people he harmed. Through Griffin, H. G. Wells conveys a powerful message: scientific knowledge and intelligence are valuable only when guided by ethics, conscience and a sense of responsibility towards society. When such power is used selfishly and without restraint, it becomes a curse - not only for others but for the wrongdoer himself, who ends up friendless, hunted and miserable. True greatness, Wells suggests, lies in using one's gifts for the good of humanity, not for selfish or destructive ends.

However, the question of where this seemingly penniless stranger got his money soon arose, especially after the local clergyman's house was burgled early one morning and money mysteriously vanished, though no thief could be seen. The same morning, Mrs Hall and her husband found the stranger's room open and his clothes scattered, but the man himself was missing. Suddenly the furniture seemed to come alive - a chair leapt into the air and pushed them both out of the room, and the door slammed shut and locked. Terrified, Mrs Hall concluded the rooms were haunted. Determined to get an explanation, she later confronted the stranger about the strange happenings and the unpaid rent. Provoked and losing his temper, Griffin suddenly threw off his bandages, dark glasses, false nose and whiskers - revealing to the horrified onlookers that there was no head and no visible body at all. He was a man without a face. Panic spread, and the village constable Mr Jaffers was summoned to arrest him. As Jaffers tried to seize him, Griffin flung off the rest of his clothes, became wholly invisible, fought off the crowd, knocked the constable senseless, and escaped from Iping unseen.
